Help!!

I think I'm about to have a major aircon crisis at our villa. We've just received a letter saying that following a service the engineers (Fred Caimari??) can't guarantee that it will last another year.

Have alredy spent a fortune this year on repairs. So probably looking to replace (ahhrrrgh!!)

Can anyone suggest good english speaking company to quote?

Also any ideas of likely cost? 4 beds on 3 floors. Will presumably need to replce unit on roof.

Any help/advice VERY gratefully received.

There are dozens of posts on the site about air-conditioning, but I can only repeat my own experiences (So many people have bought me a drink as a result of my previous posts, that I don't mind saying it again!)

Go to Confort in the Port. Miguel knows what he is talking about. He will come to your property and give you a quote appropriate to your individual needs.
His workmen know what they are doing.
He has done work for at least a dozen people I know. They are all still friends, and all swear by Confort!

I can only agree with Frito. We got air con installed this August and used Miguel at Confort. His English is excellent and he will give you good advice and a quote.

I have a 3 bedroom apartment which was pre-installed for air con (not sure how much difference this made to the price) and it cost Euro 5,200. This was Euro 800 cheaper than the next cheapest quote. We are very pleased with the work. It only took 1.5 days to install the engineers spoke good English and were very tidy. I would definately recommend Confort.

Does anyone know if Miguel at Confort has an email contact address please? I'm trying to set up a meeting with him (we have one unit which keeps tripping out the electrics) when we are out in Feb.

Jane - many thanks ~ excellent service. I Googled the same enquiry with no result ~ you are obviously a better Googler than me :D
Only use the website from time to time but once again a great result.

I know that Confort don't check their email very often. I had to email my NIE number to them and I know they didn't access the email until I called with them in the shop two months later! I would suggest that you would be better phoning to arrange an appointment. Though if you are going to be in PP for a few days I am sure Miguel will accomodate you if you just called in.

I can't locate the phone number of Confort at present but if I manage to find it I will let you know.

I have a similar problem to yourself

We have an air con unit that serves 4 rooms ( each room having a wall mounted unit that delivers hot or cold air )

It seems the large air con compressor unit which is in the utility room is divided into 2 parts each of which service 2 of the rooms

Last July the aircon in 2 of the rooms failed

We had it "regassed" by the same company you mentioned did your servicing ( Caimari ) at a cost of 200 odd euros

By Feb it was broken again ( infact it could have broken before then - we were over in Sept and Oct but required neither air con or heat so never switched the units on ) and when we got them back to look at it he told us it was empty of gas so must have a leak

We have now been given a 600 odd euro quote to "find the leak"

I am thinking this is throwing good money after bad

As the wall units appear to be ok and we already have all the trunking - I am thinking it may be worth just getting a new compressor unit ( the big thing that sits in the utility room )

I just wondered what you had done ; did you go to Miguel at Confort as per Fritos advice or did you stick with Caimari

And were you happy with the outcome

Also - does anyone know roughly what I am likely to have to pay for a new unit ?

Just signed up after enjoying reading all posts here, having had a townhouse now for 8 years in the Town. The Wife reads most weeks but does not 'do' forums, but sure does comment, so have decided to sign her up - you can be sure she WILL contribute!!
So Graham, our experience with Caimari; after arriving with very little idea of who to trust to install air con 8 years ago, we made the fatal mistake of picking up the Mallorca Daily Bulletin where we found an 'English qualified Heating Engineer' based in the souh of the Island. Well, to cut a long story short, it took a non-English speaking heating engineer to come and sort out the mess - and guess what, hardly charged us a Euro for doing so - the name of this company....yes Fred Caimari!!
I was so impressed that (unsurprisingly) when I had saved up to get the second bedroom air conditioned I simply asked him to do it - naively without a quote, but was really impressed with the workmanship and quality of matierials and overall standard of the job. They have retuned to 'charge' both their unit and the one they took over (at NO cost) and as such I have also recommended them to a friend to have them install Daikin units to a Four bedroom townhouse in Pollenca, again to a superb standard.
Finally, as I can only persuade my current employer to let me have 6 weeks holiday a year, most of which we spend on the Island, if ever there is a need to get Fred over, then an amusing visit to their shop, with notebook in hand, pointing to calendar and then watch, guarantees their arrival at our address normally within hours if not a day to provide the annual service.
Well - end of first post...hope haven't bored members too much, but we have learnt SO much from reading this forum, so time to give some back! Thank you guys.
PS - some info' we heard on our last visit in Jan this year - the 'private residence' between Hotel Juma and Cafe Illa on the Placa Major is to be turned into yet another cafe bar - how many more tables can be squeezed onto this lovely square?!!

Roughly how much per room did it cost you ?

I'm getting more and more confused - you were charged almost nothing for recharging and I have been charged more than 200 euros to recharge with Gas which has now leaked away and now it is looking like they need more than 600 euros to find the leak ................ and its the same company that you use

Advice needed from someone who knows more than I do

Is there anyone out there who has had aircon fitted recently who can give me an idea of the cost of a multi unit that will chill 4 rooms ?

Sorry to hijack your post with my own query. I have an apartment with a remote controlled panasonic multi unit system, but I would like to fit sensors on patio doors that would cut out while the doors are open. Can this be done wirelessly or do they need to be wired? Help please.

According to my husband who knows a little about these things, he doesnt think Panasonic do a wireless system , but you could do it with a 12v maglock which fits onto the patio doors and that is connected to a relay that switches the outdoor unit on and off. Yet again, Confort may well have an engineer that can do this for you.

Just read all the posts re AC and are somewhat confused. A foreign language to me. I am actually asking a question on behalf of someone else.

My friend has a 2 bedroom apartment in the Old Town which doesn't have AC. She wants to install in the bedrooms only and have a system that provides hot air for heating in the winter if possible.
Is it possible for her to buy something in Alcampo or somewhere and have fitted to the wall? I know she wants to keep costs down to a minimum. She stays most of the summer in Pollensa and is finding it too hot. The apartment is not rented so it will be her using it only.
She is by herself and has little confidence in getting someone in (as she says!) having been bitten in the past by tradesman.
Just wondered if there was a cheap and easy way round the problem other than opening the windows!
 
We used Comfort and found them to be most helpful in advising positoning and then fitting.
 
One of the Comfort engineers resides in our block so we have the benefit of a resident engineer. Our problem took 2 visits to sort ~ now completely resolved. I think there are basically two alternatives .... fixed or freestanding units. The problem with fixed is that provision will need to be made for the necessary pipework to link the compressor to the fan units. This type of installation can allow for hot and cold (conditioned) air wheras I'm not sure if freestanding units can provide warmed air. Freestanding take up floor space whereas the fixed fan units are often located at a high level ~ above doors for example. The freestanding will generally require a 15 amp circuit (normal sockets) - the wall units require a similar circuit to an electric oven i.e, c. 30 amp - so your electrical provision is best checked first.
 
Thanks for this info. I will tell my friend to contact comfort. I think she knows of them. I think the problem is that she has been ripped off so often in the past she is somewhat nervous of the same happening. Comfort I know have a good name and come highly recommended by so many.
 
Eleanor we had a/c put in last year by Confort. Miguel came and discussed at length the best places to put the units and the engineer who came to install was fantastic. He spent about a day and a half fitting the units which included the trunking, which he did without making any mess...he kept asking for the hoover to clear up the dust! When he left he even kissed us all goodbye( not hubby!) This could have been more to do with the fact my daughter was with us and can speak fluent Spanish tho ;)
