Help!

We arrived in lovely Pollensa earlier today and we have wifi in our villa. I had great plans to watch a sporting tomorrow by avoiding the result during the day and then downloading it using my iPlayer app on to my iPad and watching it in the evening.

However, horror of horrors, I've just found that I can't do that because the iPlayer says I'm outside the UK!!

Anybody got any ideas of a workaround?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Technically it's illegal to access the service from outside the UK. Having said that, if you were to search for a UK vpn that you could access with the ipad, then you would be able to view any site as if you were in the UK . I can't recommend any, and the speed of your connection may be seriously limited, but it's the only realistic solution.

You will need a VPN ( virtual private network) . This is possible to purchase if you go online. I'm not sure exactly how much but think it's about £7 or £8 for a month.

Search for an app on your iPad called 'film on TV' - it's free to download.
Once installed you can watch hundreds of channels and films over wifi.
I use it every time I'm abroad. I'm using it now. It is brilliant.
.

"Expat shield" - I've never tried it myself but its the app that's always recommended on the football forums I use. :)

Thanks for all the replies. I downloaded the film on TV app, and while that gave me the option of watching BBC Three, which was showing highlights of the Grand Prix, I'm afraid that the wifi router in our villa is obviously not up to the job as the picture was constantly buffering.

However, Almost by luck I discovered that the satellite TV in the villa has a channel that shows the BBC red button, and they have been showing a full repeat of the Grand Prix this evening, so I managed to catch it on there, having avoided the result all day (including a near miss in a cafe in Pollenca where we pooed in to buy a nice cream for our 6 year old, and the race was being shown on their TV!).

The gran prix is always shown on one of the Spanish channels, just have to imagine the commentary!!.

I dont have an Ipad but if you search the itunes store for UK VPN you get this

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/uk-vpn/id629316776?mt=8

It says free for 3 days trial so worth a try for your TV watching.

Remember not to do any online banking or other serious stuff on a VPN that you dont know lots about as all your traffic goes through the servers of who ever is providing the VPN and not everyone is trustworthy.

I think you will find that the constant buffering is due to insufficient RAM on your device or a slow broadband connection rather than a problem with the router.
