Hello all ,
I have tried searching for this is the forum but haven't had any luck
I am off to PP at the end of March :) . I am struggling finidng a car hire company does not require the driver to have a credit card in their name.
Has anyone ever used a car hire (pick up from airport) that doesn't own a credit card.

Thanks in advance

thanks

Thank you, I will contact them :)

Most of the companies like the credit card so they can whip the money off if there's any damage/excess cleaning etc. Terry might be your best bet.

Success with Terry's, yippee.:):)
Thanks for the help/advise

isn't it just easier to just get a credit card

They don't cost anything and if you dont like using them then just use for the car hire and nothing else .................. otherwise you could find yourself limiting your options re car hire

Not always that easy for everyone in this climate cd for various reasons.
Also some people just don't agree with them and refuse to have one.

I've recently chopped up about 3 of mine as my personal circumstances have changed and I don't want the temptation. I only keep one now which I only use when I have to. I'm sure if I tried to get one now in my own right - the banks would run a mile lol - everything was based on my husband!

If Terry's are happy to proceed without a card then that is great and says a lot for his company.

I dont know if this will work... but if a credit card isn't possible but required maybe interested parties could research this a bit more.

Post office visa card....

U use it wherever 'VISA' is taken but the difference is... u load it before u use it (in the UK) So ur car hire is gonna be say ÂŁ500... so before u go on holiday, u put ÂŁ500 on the card then present it where & when required.

( ...and glad that u are sorted jet2majorca, but thought it mite be useful for others)

It is also a neat way of not carrying cash with u on holiday.

Sorry I didn't mean to offend and seriously didn't realise credit cards were so hard to come by ...... I must get a letter offering one at least every fortnight and also get stopped and offered a bribe of a scarf or a hat everytime I go to football in exchange for a credit card ............... same happens whenever I am at an airport

I guess they are fine so long as you pay the balance off each month but can become a problem if you dont

Good to see Terry's dont require them but I have to say the quote I got from Terry's for car hire at easter was about 20% more than either Record or Carjet

MED777

The post office card is not a credit card so it can not be used in the same way as a credit card because you may only have ÂŁ10 on the post office card and you dont get a credit limit on the card.

Hope that helps

Gordon

My post on here was my last resort before I thought I would have to swollow my pride and go against my beliefs of getting a credit card, I have had them in the past and I would rather not have one, so I am paying them off instead.
3 cheers for Terry's (and this forum) for coming to the rescue :)

Only way to use them is to pay them off at the end of the month, otherwise a pair of scissors:)

med777 you're correct, rangers1 afraid you've got it wrong

we do this every time for car hire using one of the many "top up and go" credit cards as we got stung very heavily when our credit card was "skimmed" in pp, got it sorted out but it had been run right up to the limit

to use the top up credit cards you have to register with the issuer for authorisation to use for car hire, very easy to do but it does require you posting them your id as proof

Just one point aren't they top up debit card not top up credit card, a debit card only lets you spend what you have or have topped up, a credit card lets you spend what you haven't got?

Travelex also offer the Cash Passport a paid-up cash card in either Euros or GBP (or other currencies) & is a VISA card. I don't know whether you can use it for Car Hire but I should think with the VISA sign & enough topped-up then you can. Does anyone know.

More info here: Foreign Currency in Majorca - Euros

Gers i bow to your knowledge even though it does not work in the way unless you have the money on the card in the first place thats why a lot of places wont take them as security as they dont know if thats the case and with a credit card they can reclaim as i have tried it

but you seem to know best so good luck with that.

Below is the link to the Post Office Travel Card and info on how it works.

I didnt say it was a credit card, just perhaps an alternative for someone who doesnt have/want a credit card but needs one. Or a handy way to avoid taking cash with u on holiday.

I've not ever used my credit cards as security ( ??) only to pay for things... so sorry, I dont understand that part Rangers1.
Anyway, the above link explains it.

Hi

No what i was referring to was that when you hire a car the car hire company will take a swipe of a creditcard for the excess etc (for paying for the car the post office card is fine) they wont take the post office card or any other pre-paid card or switch card as they are debit cards not credit cards.

Miriam sorry if i have confused you didnt mean to just tyring to help and i hope the above now explains.for everyday spending i use the post office card when on hols its great and it is less hassle than opening a nationwide account etc however i will be changing this year to travelex money card as they have no ATM charges.

Cheers

Gordon

Hi Miriam, paying for the petrol by credit card is their security as Rangers says, if you damage the car they already have your card details and can take money from it to pay for damages.
We have both the post office card and a Nationwide card, both have free withdrawals, one thing is I haven't been able to view the balances while over there so you need to keep a good record to make sure you dont go over, for which you will be charged

Check out holiday currency here

To clear things up it would be useful if people who have used any of these pre-paid cards which are not Credit Cards, but a sort of Debit Card with a fixed sum in them, have used them to pay for Car Hire & if so which cards & which car hire companies. I think the issue comes when they wish to hold your card details against possible damage. Sometimes in hotels they pre-authorise a sum, which means that your available balance is reduced until you have paid & the pre-auth cancelled. They warn about that for the Cash Passport (similar to PO card) but I don't know if the Mallorca Car Hire firms do that?
