EU referendum

Without trying to elicit peoples views on whether the referendum is a good or bad thing, does anyone have any thoughts on what an "out" decision might mean for us.

Some of my own thoughts - A higher non resident tax maybe, a different exchange rate, denied use of the EU Health card, possible restrictions on residency, possible import/export duties to name but a few

Can i just say here that while talking about the possible effects of a decision to come out of the EU is perfectly OK please do not turn this into a political debate, that is not what the forum is for.

I dont live in the UK but as a UK passport holder (born and bred in the UK) living in central Europe and partime on Majorca - I am serious considering applying for a alternative passport ,I have the right to apply for a passport for the country I live in as I have lived here for more than 8 years or I could apply for a another EU member state passport by deed right of my heritage ( grandparents and parents ) this idea was spured by an article in the Guardian late last year suggesting that this may be the only route open to long term expats in Central / North Europe.

The UK has reciprocal NHS health care arrangements / treaties with many countries around the world - not just within the EU - Australia and New Zealand being prime examples and the EHIC card already covers several countries that are not members of the EU including Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein which are EEA members and Switzerland which is neither a member of the EU or EEA.

If the UK votes to leave the EU this triggers two years of negotiations expressly provided for under the EU Lisbon Treaty in order to settle a new relationship between the UK and EU before the UK actually leaves. Voting to leave does not therefore automatically mean the end to existing rights and freedoms (including those for reciprocal healthcare) for the millions of EU citizens visiting or living in the UK or UK citizens visiting or living in the EU.

I realise that the Forum is "politically neutral" but my conversations with Spanish friends at the Club Pollensa last night revealed their real concerns and fears of the possibility of a UK departure. Particularly with regard to inspiring other right wing nationalist movements in other European countries to attempt similar departures.

Europe is scared because of how much we contribute, in many ways, and what we bring to the union. If the UK leaves I believe the EU is done for. And let's face it, Spain is a small "player" (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way) so no wonder they're concerned.

I want what's best for the UK but I am worried if we leave as I own property in PP. Let's just hope that whatever way it goes it's for the best.

Yes. Their concerns were really about the political and economic impact of the EU breaking up and the instability that this would create. Inevitably it would result in an increase of nationalism (as it has parts of the U.K.) and within Spain the likelihood of support for Catalan separation. The main beneficiary of this chaos being Russia.

I know two people who have lived and worked in France for years. Both are applying for French nationality to protect residency rights - they've seen the writing on the wall should the UK leave. I presume that there will be British ex-pats living in Spain considering similar or considering sellling up and moving back to the UK.

Passengers travelling to Spain already have to complete API at the moment so most of the info is already there

On the front this evening they were offering 1.15 for notes. Two days ago it was 1.22.
