e111

While it is important to have an e111 card, let me tell you about our experience towards the end of last year.

My daughter was taken ill in PP and I was told that the equiv of NHS doctor only visited PP on certain days and the day my daughter was ill was not that day.I rushed her to Dr Kessels surgery who is a private and a fantastic dr (have had to use him in the past)and she was immediately admitted to hospital with what they thought was appendicitous, after tests were taken, we were told she had salmonella, and so I spent the next 7 nights in Muro hospital with her. Muro and Alcudia hospital are both private and so are not covered by the e111.
However was told by a friend today that they were skiing in Austria recently and they had an horrendous accident resulting in 2 nights in hospital, scans, x rays etc, but because of the e111 it only cost them 20 euros.

don't just rely on the e111 in PP . make sure you are fully insured, you never know when you may need it. Salmonella is pretty awful especially in children and the elderly, and five months on she still has it.

Re European Health Insurance Card

Sorry if I'm a pain!:(

Has everyone got their EHIC now?

And remember to take it with you , as well as your Travel Insurance docs!

There now, that was painless!:lol

Go and enjoy!;)

Re: Re European Health Insurance Card

I've just seen a Watchdog programme on healthcare in Spain, where they recommended getting the above cards, and avoiding pricey private hospitals. Having read previous threads on this subject, am I right in assuming the only state doctor in PP is next to police station/swimming pool. Where is the nearest state hospital? I know the hospital in Alcudia is private, and there's a state hospital in Inca, but is that the nearest?

The nearest state hospital is the Son Dureta in Palma and the state doctors in the Port prefer holidaymakers to go to the PACs Emergencies in Pollensa old town - I've known people to be sent there before when showing their E111 in the Port

Thanks for the info Mariquita!

Just checked ours.

Valid from 1/9/2005 and the expiry date shown on the cards is 1/12/2009.

So will need to remember to renew next year!!

Thanks again!:)

Hospital

The nearest state hospital with an emergency unit is in Inca, just off the motorway.

Thanks for the info...I had no idea they expired.Had not looked and assumed that it was like the old paper version...valid indefinately (unless used of course)..ours expire 2010 so will need to diary this.:)

I did not realise this either. Made me check (we are okay until 2011)?

wonder if you get a reminder about this.

Looking recently at our EHIC's they expire on 1st December, so have just done the renewal application using the link below.

It's stated that the renewal card should be with us in seven days (Postal strikes permitting)!

You'll need your existing card for a PIN reference shown on it and also your National Insurance Number, to make your renewal application.

The renewal cards arrived today, by second class post.

No probs re postal strikes then!:D

Expiry 29/10/14 so 5 years from date of renewal application.

Thank you so much for your post,it made me check my card which had run out last year,so have asked for renewal,we are not going to island for three weeks so thanks to you done in time, fingers crossed.
scarlett

Scarlett, They're usually pretty good with re-newing them, 3 weeks should be plenty of time.

Can I just remind everyone to check the expiry date on their European Health Insurance Cards. According to 'Martins Money tips' 6 million will be out of date in first half of 2011.

Thanks Cheryl, I will check ours tonight

Just got my new ones today ..... they only took about a week to come and very easy to renew online :)

have to admit that we have never had these
as we always rely on our travel insurance
which (touch wood ) we have never had to claim on :)

Smiddy,

Get them, just as a back up. Some insurance companies will not pay out if you do not have one.

Just checked mine, run out last October, whoops
