Hi whaleywander
What is formentor like, where do you get the boat from, any recomendations for lunch?

You get the boat to Formentor along the side of Stay restaurant. Formentor is very nice, the sea is lovely and very clear and more choppy than PP. The beach is not that wide and can get very busy when the tour boats arrive, you have to watch you dont stand on someone's head when getting off your sunbed.

The last couple of years rather than spending the whole day up there we have caught the boat at about 10am it takes about half an hour to get there then spend about 1.5 hours in the sea and get out in time to catch the bus back which I think is about 12ish so that way you get to see the view on the way back.

The snack bar is expensive for what you get so if going for the day might be an idea to take a packed lunch.

Hope that helps.

We found this beach very disappointing...overcrowded, overflowing beach, bins and not the tranquill hidden idyll expected... many better around CSV etc..

But its worth it for the sea in my opinion

If you ever get the opportunity go between October and May - It's paradise.

In total agreement with you whaleywanderer... Formentor is my idea of heaven on earth :)

Could swim in that sea all day and love the smell of the pine trees that line the beach...and best of all no seaweed like Cala often has!

We were there the week before last and, although very busy in July and August, it's still our favourite place. We usually go early afternoon with a picnic and stay 'till 7'ish. By this time the beach is nearly desserted...so just lay back, have a cold beer and if you're lucky listen to some locals singing along to a guitar accompliment...Bliss!

Roll on September

This was my birthday day out.

Stopped at Caprabo on the way for snacks, cakes and wine to fill the rucksack.

Walk along a deserted beach with my wife and enjoy my birthday picnic.

Will be there again on 27th February 2009, is already booked and paid for :)

In mid June it was slightly busy, but not oppressively so. It's a nice boat ride from the port. I was interested to read a recent post suggesting a bus ride back. An interesting idea.

The hotel is (how can I put this) not welcoming to those without the apparent wherewithall!

Just going back to using the bus to get to Formentor....we caught the 11.15 am (might have been 11.30) by the taxi rank, not crowded at all. It takes about 20 mins to arrive at beach car park. Took some great photos on the way there and back. We caught 3.15pm (or 3.30) bus back at same place...absolutely no prob. Fare was 2.20 Euros each return, great value as it costs £3.60 to travel about two miles up the road here in sunny(!) Poole. Also good to keep costs down to have extra drinkies at night!!!

I don't know why, but we haven't been to Formentor beach for years. Reading these posts has made me determined to make the trip next holiday. We've travelled by car and boat in the past but never by bus. Sounds like you had a nice day animagic21 and definitely worth a try.

It was perfect! We've been visiting PP for 16 years but never been to the beach before as Mr. A doesn't like driving up steep, windy roads and neither do I. We were so chuffed to find somewhere new!

No news on the hotel then?
Love the drive there out of season, and the walk and scramble along the "front". Never been there when there were actual people on the beach!

formentor

very crowded give it a miss the best part is the boat trip

Formentor is soooooooo lovely!!!!! We go by boat which i love, i go for the boat trip alone!!
I agree with taking a picnic, you can get sandwiches etc once you're there but found them a bit of a rip off, very expensive (about double the amount you'd pay in the port)I like a coffee and to read the paper in the beach bar half way down the beach.
Beware of the mini jelly fish if you go paddling!
Incidently, i got the Formentor bus last year, but asked the driver to drop us at El comer mirador (look out point). We got the same bus back after it had been to Formentor, which gives you about 1/2 hour at the mirador, which is just enough to enjoy the view and take a few photos, If anyone hasn't been, it's worth it, you see the cliffs views on lots of postcards.
Think this year i'll see how far it is to walk to Formentor beach from the mirador, has anyone done this?
I'll be there this time next week!!!!:)

I´m puzzled Peter that you think Formentor should be given a miss!!

In total agreement with you Liz it´s the most perfect setting and the water is crystal clear. We also prefer the beach nearer the hotel ,and love a coffee at the beach bar reading the paper and gazing at the wonderful view. The beach bar has been upgraded to a restauarant this year, as opposed to a snack bar....pasta and pizzas mainly and waiter service. You can still just have a coffee tho :)

We would be there today if the weather wasn´t cloudy, but hopefully if it brightens we´ll drive over for a last coffee. Coming home tomorrow :(
