Hotel prices coming down 30%

Balearic hoteliers are having to drop their prices by 30% or more in order to retain business this summer. The need to reduce prices came across loud and clear at the ITB fair in Berlin last week.

The extent to which hotels will lower prices will be partially influenced by what they have in the bank following four or five years that were a boom for the Balearics. The president of the Majorca Hoteliers Federation, Maria Frontera, said in Berlin that there has been a great deal of investment for repositioning hotels and increasing their star categories. Now, it will be up to each business to assess its strengths and "adopt a strategy to improve the level of bookings".

Well, thanks for that, Sparky :(

Following last weeks trip to that volcanic desert that is Lanzarote, where for the most part, the weather was better in PP. I decided Mrs Clinkham needed cheering up.

Soooo, we treated ourselves to a September week at the Club Illa d'Dor apartments.

Now there is news of hotel price reductions........ bah humbug. :mad:

I wonder if the airlines are going to be reducing fares?
 
I don't think Hotels like the Illa d'or will be dropping prices by 30% any time soon.

The media do love a good headline though!
 
I don’t think that a drop in average prices across the island is likely to result in a reduction at the best places to stay. I doubt that hotels like the Illa d’or have a problem with occupancy rates, and I doubt that the majority of their guests have a problem with the cost.
 
A pity this is not happening to apartments, just checked from 2017 to 2019 apartment prices have risen between 25% to 40% in that time. A one bed apartment in September/ October up from £500 to £700 in two years. I believe the ordinary holiday maker will go else were and that is bad news for jobs in restaurants and bars.
 
I am tempted to take over one of the recently closed shops and open a Food Bank or Soup Kitchen for us poor tourists.
 
I am afraid i don't understand the sarcasm :confused:.

I was merely passing on what was reported in the local press, i don't think for one minute that all hotels will reduce prices but obviously some are, probably because they were overpriced anyway. As for apartment rents, the price was bound to increase due to the high cost of obtaining a license.

It's OK i was aware of what you meant and didn't think for a minute it was my post.

Members have every right to comment on the high accommodation costs and shouldn't have to endure sarcastic replies when they do :mad:.

That's exactly what is happening. Fortunately the apartment we rent has now obtained the neccesary licence etc. and the increase is not that bad. However, having looked at hotel prices it would have been the Greek islands as usual.
