Our plans to move to mallorca are finally slowly moving forward. With that in mind we're starting to look at the logistics, and one question we have is about long term car hire.

Until we are fully registered locals, I don't believe we can buy a car, and therefore would need to hire or lease a car. This could be for a while if what I've heard about the speed of Spanish bureaucracy is true.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? If we have to use holiday car hire it could get expensive.

Codex i am pleased to hear that your plans a working out well. Sorry i can't help you re- long term car hire but it doesn't take a long time to get your residency certificate (N.I.E). When we got ours we used Mallorca Solutions to help us and the whole process took about an hour :D.

Thanks Sparky, blimey, that's quick! I've got a friend who has moved near to Malaga and after 5 months still hasn't managed to sort it out properly. Having said that, it's probably more an indictment on him rather than the spanish authorities.

If you have a property here and an NIE number then there is no reason why you cannot buy a car, we bought ours before we moved out here permanently.

Thanks, that's all good advice. Is it possible to get NIE before we move (or soon afterwards)? We're likely to be renting for at least the first year whilst we find our feet.

As far as i am aware you have to be present, we provided our rental contract and a utility bill as proof of residence.

Try the local banks like Bankia or La Caixa to lease a car on a 6-12 month contract. You pay one price per month all inclusive of tax's, insurance etc - subject to the class of car you require.

It's a good way to start off as you learn the system and adapt to the bureaucracy in Spain!?

Most of them seem to go through arval.es

( Sparky, please remove the link if not appropriate )

If you want to buy a car then I fully recommend Ford Inca. we have found them to be very professional in every department of buying and service etc.

The also have a large selection of used cars......Good luck!
