Museo Sa Bassa Blanca

We have lived here for 15 years and only just found the Art Musuem at Mal Pas near Alcudia, but what a find!

"Stunning", "Amazing" , "Fantastic" are words come into mind. Not only is there two large picture galleries with hundreds of pictures, but there is a open area sculpture park in beautiful grounds. In addition there is a villa full of priceless works of art. We took a private guided tour of the villa which was worth every euro. If you go, then this tour highly recomended

It is owned by a private group of artists who are clearly very wealthy. Everything is in pristine condition.

To see everything they recommend allowing 4 hours, as it is so big.

It is so remote that it doesn't get many visitors. In fact we reckoned there were more staff than visitors.

To get there take the road from Alcudia towards Bonaire and at the first mini- roundabout turn right and it is about three miles at the end of this narrow road almost at the beach. (There is no access from the beach). It is in fact right next to the Alcanada golf course, but there is no road access from the Alcanada side.

If you want to research it then look for "Museo Sa Bassa Blanca"
 
Sounds really interesting. How much is the admission charge?

I've been past it a couple of times on my bike and looked it up, it looks fab.

I'm planning to go when back in Sept.

*The exhibition spaces are closed from 13.00 to 14.00 h. The ticket office closes 30 minutes before closing time.
Closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Tuesday from 14.00 to18.00h: limited Admission free.
Gives access to the Nins collection, Sculpture Park and Rose Garden.

Certainly worth a visit. :cool:

I have been 3 times and see or notice something new on every visit.

As you say, it is well worth the time spent getting there and the amazing and unexpected art and articles on view.

The outside sculpture park is free. The Ninas gallery is €10; it contains paintings of many children as well as English, French, Austrian and Spanish monarchs. The gallery is beautifully decorated and the paintiings well presented.

We didn't visit the Socrates gallery as we were out of time, but i think it is also free.

We paid €25 each for the two of us to have an hour long private tour of the house. Although expensive I really recommend this. It ia a large house full of art, including a Picasso and some works by Yoko Ono. Words can't describe house amazing it is.

We got the feeling that they weren't that bothered to attract visitors, and maybe it is open to the public as a tax break? Having said that, the staff were very polite and helpful. They have a lot of gardeners, so the grounds are beautiful

There is a shortage of museum staff, so the lady that manned the shop also served us drinks in the cafe and did the house tour. Not all the galleries are open all the time, so you may have to wait for one gallery to close before the other opens.

All galleries close between 1 and 2 despite what it says in the literature.

Despite all of this is well worth visiting: You are transformed into another world.

I tried to drive to this museum two or three years ago - followed the signs and directions to the track. But it was so potholed and uneven I was concerned about damaging my car. Is it any better now?

That saves my next question, can you get there on bikes! Sounds like you may not be able to

Yes,amazing place and certainly not overrun.

We went there from Alcudia once via taxi and had the lovely staff call us one for the return journey.
(Don't try it like us on Alcudia market day, as we had to wait for a bit for the taxi.)

Google maps has it at 27 minutes cycling time from Alcudia. Have a look at the profile,it might be doable.

The road is narrow and a bit bumpy but certainly passable and typical of most Mallorca country lanes. The road ends at a fork with some large closed gates on the left side. Since the gate was closed we took the RH track which was certainly pot holed and a bit dodgy. It is a dead end. When we returned to the fork we then read the notice and realized that it you drive up to a white line the gates will open automatically.
 
God forbid me to be accused of disliking bikers, but I would imagine that a certain “dress code” is called for.

Even though it is in the sticks, the museum is definitely “up market” and would not be out of place in any major capital city.

Lycra would probably be accepted, but frowned upon, but in no way can I imagine them allowing people to enter the underground art gallery wearing cycling shoes making click click noises with every step they take.

Just my opinion. I well may be wrong.

But not all cyclists wear lycra and cycling shoes.

Thanks, we may give it a go then, we cycle long distances, we cycled from Pollensa to the golf club in Alcanada, and all the way to Mal Pas pass the turning off to it, so should be ok
