NAtional Insurance Card, going to doctors today.

Hello all,

I am going to the doctors today for a wound on my toe, its pretty bad!

I have my national insurance CArd and travel insurance that I took out before coming to mallorca.

I am here for a few months, I am going to see the "international doctor" this afternoon.

Will they be able to help me? How much will it cost? any othe rinformation would be apreciated!!

If your toe wound is bad, why not go straight to the PAC in Pollenca.
This is the local place that deals with emergencies, and I am sure your European Health Card will be accepted.
They are to be found at the back of the Cloisters/Residencia in Pollenca.

Frito, just for future reference, could you give the name of the road the PAC is on in Pollensa, so we can find it on a map. You never know when you might need it!

PAC in Pollenca

I think the PAC is on Bisbe Despach.


At the back of the Cloisters/Residencia is a children's playground, (opposite the bus stop to the Port.)
If you stand looking at the playground, the road on the right of the playground goes to the Cloisters.
Go down the road to the left of the playground , and the PAC is on the right.

Hello Frito,
I will be in PP for a month next week & like to be prepared for any emergencies particulally with 3 grandchildren, Please tell me what is PAC?

I'm suddenly becoming an expert on something I know nothing about!!!!!!

The PAC is a clinic or health centre, which people tend to use in case of minor emergency, which does not involve a hospital or an ambulance.
It is open all the time.
I think PAC means "Punto de Atencio Continuada." (A point of continuous attention?)

I know people who have used the PAC after having a nasty fall in the street, needing a cut on the leg dealt with, and someone who had a severe allegic reation etc. They both had to wait a short time, but were seen by a doctor.

I had my first experiance of the 'PAC' on our last holiday to PP in April. As my partner crossed the road on a crossing in PP, he was hit by a motorcyclist. Thank god my our two young girls were not on it! Anyway, police quickly arrived and locals and tourists were brilliant! Next we were taken by the policemen to PAC in Pollenca. You wouldnt have got a bleeding man with two small children and me in the back of a police car in U.K! An ambulance would have been called here and police to deal with the uninjured motorcyclist and take statements etc. The police we had did nothing with the motorcyclist. Anyway we got to the PAC and waited a short time. My partner showed his E111 card, it was photocopied and he was stitched up very neatly. We had a few follow up visits and each time they checked the card. Experiance of PAC and its staff was brilliant. The only negatives i had about it all is that the police did nothing with the man, no breath tests, no statements etc and that the PAC had no one who could speak english well. I think a hospital in that location where quite a lot of brits end up could do with at least one person who could explain things to us better.
In the end the man who hit my partner said it was all his fault and my partner decided not to take it any further.

Have taken these numbers from "Holiday in Puerto Pollensa" magazine:-

Police.....092
Ambulance.....061
For emergencies of any kind,accident, fire, sudden illness etc dial 112 and you can be connected to an English-speaking operator who will contact the appropriate service for you.

Yes, we too have used the PAC - my husband had a nasty chest infection this spring. We just turned up on a Sunday morning and he was seen within ten minutes and given a prescription for antibiotics. Certainly beats A and E in the UK! Stupidly we had forgotten to take our EU health insurance cards with us so he had to pay a fee to see the doctor - about 50 euros if memory serves me right. If he'd had his EHIC card it would have been free... You can apply for the cards online at Service Home - there's a one-off fee of £9.95.

Thanks so much for the info about the emergency service numbers. As you say with children it is best to be prepared for every eventuality... as we discovered two years ago (we're not hypochondriacs, honest!) My four-year-old daughter swallowed a coin and couldn't breathe - and we did not know who to call. Fortunately we were able to get hold of a Mallorcan friend who called them for us but it could obviously have been very serious. (Interestingly they sent not only an ambulance but also a doctor and paramedic in a separate car - and because our villa is hard to find a police escort as well! If my daughter hadn't been struggling for breath at the time she would probably have enjoyed all the fuss. Anyway we didn't get charged a penny for this although we never showed our EHIC cards.)

Whoops - had no idea that wasn't an NHS website... it all looked very official! Oh well - it was only £9.95 for all of us so it could have been worse - but I'm glad I know for next time round!

I did not realise that the EHIC cards had an expiry date - fortunately I noticed that earlier this year and have renewed - it's very quick and simple to do.
I might add that as a result of a small mishap last August it proved most useful.
