Porto Petro

A long way from PP, it is at the diametrically opposite end of the island in the south east about three or four miles from Cala d'Or.

What travel writers would probably call a sleepy fishing village and with a quiet harbour with a good selection of yachts. Perhaps up to about a dozen restaurants nestling round the harbour in nice locations for a long lingering lunch or dinner .

No real beach but if you want that Cala d'Or with its coves not far away. Cala of course has a lot of German visitors and there are German complexes as you approach the town.

There is a picturesque if dangerous walk from Porto Petro round a rocky headland to Cala Mondrago which has a small but very busy beach. There are two Thomson accomodations at CM so Brits from there are on the beach with lots of Germans who will have come from CD.

A lot of topless bathing at CM and not sure whether it was a relic of WW2 but there were a fair number of heavy cruisers on the beach. Big guns for'ard, formidable amidships and classic cruiser sterns !! .:rollin :rollin

Hi Porto!

We went to Porto Petro for lunch on our last day (the day we flew home) and we had a lovely lunch overlooking the marina.

Normally our last day is pretty miserable as we wander around aimlessly, but this time we had a plan! We had a great breakfast at Restaurant Llenaire and then we ambled slowly off down the coast passing some stunning scenery en route to Porto Petro.

It was a beautiful hot day and we stopped for a drink at a quiet little place called Cala Estany, or little Switzerland, as we re-named it. Just a largish beach with towering cliffs at each end and a friendly little beach bar.

But we loved Porto Petro - so pretty and compact with some good fish restauants lining the harbour.

On our way inland to the airport and not far from Santanyi, we also passed another very pretty village with a big church and a little square full of cafes. The village was called Alqueria Blanca and I would have loved to have stopped and explored. Maybe next time...

It's ironic (and a bit sad :\ ) that our last day was probably the best.

& just beyond Cala Mondrago is Cala Figuera - definitely the prettiest Cala we have seen. There is no beach at all but it is an active fishing port. Whilst we were wandering around at about 4:30 pm 3 fishing boats came in & offloaded their catch selling some on the quay side & taking the rest to the cold store nearby. There are even fishermen mending their nets.

There is a walk way all around the port & each waterside property appears to have its own slip way. Very difficult to describe but definitely worth a trip to Porto Petro, Cala Mondrago (lovely beach by a nature reserve) & then Cala Figuera.

My little secret Porto Petro will now be overrun by tourist hordes!:eek

A long day down there in the car but worth it for the restaurants round the little harbour and for the lovely beach at Cala Mondrago.

thats so funny you mentioned Cala Estany, My hubby loves that place so much and every summer he used to make us drive over to spend the day there. This year though the kids really didn't want to go as they get fed up of the drive, and I think they're a bit worried he might want to move there, and as I was on their side, lol we didn't make it. It is nice but I wouldn't swap PP for it.

We also visited Porto Petro first in 1984, when there really was absolutely nothing there and Cala D'or was just a sleepy little resort with a couple of hotels and a few apartments being built. It really was beautiful then and we holidayed there three years running, even for our honeymoon, but when we returned for the third time and a wimpy bar had sudenly appeared, we decided to call it a day, and look elsewhere.(Burgerking hasn't put us off PP yet) We did have a day trip back to Cala D'or about 2 years ago, and although the coves are beautiful, couldn't believe what has happened to that sleepy little resort.
