Every year we have a family of fly catchers nest underneath the roof over our terrace in Alcanada. We have great fun watching them sit, then feeding the chicks and one year I saw a first flight. It gives us great enjoyment.
However this year it seems the chicks were taken by something when we were out. The two chicks were about 3 days old and being fed by both parents, but when we came back from shopping the chicks had disappeared and there was blood near to the nest. The nest cannot be accessed by cats or rats, and we can only think it was another bird that did the deed.
After the chicks were gone the parents were in the bushes nearby tweeting a lot and a biggish bird was around. It had a similar shape to a pigeon but was slightly smaller. ( it could have been a small pigeon)
Any ideas?
