Replacement Windows/kitchen Units

Can anyone recommend a local commpany to replace a small window.

Its currently a louvred window which lets in the wind!!! and I want it replaced in UPVC. I had a quote from a firm in Pollensa for an aluminium one but seemed very expensive - 400euros + tax for a 150 by 67 window. I can get one in england for a fraction of this price!!

Previously I asked for recommendations for flat pack Kitchens, but got no response. IKEA works out 60% more expensive here than in England (at the moment partly due to the poor exchange rate)

Is it worth buying in GB and sending it out?

Any helpwould be appreciated

Try Mike Wetherill on +34 971 864207. We had painting, shutters, interior woodwork and a million odd jobs to do when we bought our place - the guys delivered everything on time at top quality. Not cheap (and we do pay a premium on the island) but it will be a good job. Couldn't fault them and believe me I'm fussy!

I can recommend a company based in Sa Pobla who have over the last few years replaced all our windows and doors and provided efficient service. Just last week we had the final windows replaced - 2 louvred windows in kitchen replaced for same reason that you mentioned - now two sliding doors in Bronze with double glazed glass . window 99.5 x 92.5 cost us about 300 euros plus iva and another window 134 x 140 cost us 400euros. We did receive a discount due to the amount of work that they have done for us but even allowing for that it should be a little cheaper - they usually take about 4 weeks from placing the order to installation. I sure would'nt go for UPVC, the UV rays dry out the oils in the plastic yellowing it and making it brittle. The best option would be "aluminio anonizado", which is aluminium that has a chemical reactive coating instead of plastic paint (i.e your typical white), this will last for years and years. For a small job you are best going direct, I always use Ferro Buso for all my jobs and to date they`ve been the most professional, at the moment though the aluminium department is having a bit of a reshuffle so I`m waiting for some jobs at present. The price you`ve quoted is not far off the mark though and the other blogger is right, we do pay a premium.
As far as kitchens go I have my suppliers as Ikea and Leroy are trash on delivering your order correctly and their fitting service is not the best. From a kitchen specialist in Palma for instance, an average kitchen comprised of say, 6 base units and 4 wall units is probably going to set you back anywhere from 3 - 6000 euros (just for the units and doors) with granite being another 2-3000, all depending on choice and quality of course. I personally try only to work with one supplier in each area to deliver consistency and get a good price/quality ratio.

Thanks for the info regarding kitchens. We're planning a new one for when we move out in March. Any suggestions for who we should use in the port? We'd rather not have Ikea or Leroy if at all possible. Has anyone tried any of the little kitchen places in the port?

We used Cuin Hogar in the Port. They were very good and the price was reasonable. They are on a side street just before you get to Flora Apartments coming from the Square.

We also used Cuin Hogar and thought they were very good.
It was about 5 years ago and cost approx 7- 7,500 euro's this included granite worktops, fridge, oven, hob and extractor.

Ferro Buso was also recommended to me by a neighbour. I'll investigate Sa Pobla, and thanks for the comments on UPVC. This is the sort of advice needed.

Its great to get comparisons and recommendations from fellow "britpollensites"
who have been through renovation fun before!!

Maybe we could start a topic on "tradespeople recommendations", where details of work done and satisfaction details could be given.

I know their are lots of ex brits doing work on the island but I would like to support the local economy if I could. Language is my barrier!! I'm concerned that they see an "ignorant brit" comming and adjust prices accordingly, a bit like in the locals bars where they have the official price and also a price for locals!! When you are on holiday you accept this, but when you are trying to set up a home with a view to integrating its different. However having said that I do think that the locals are genuinely nice people. But with current exchange rates it seems very expensive to get things done.

Any suggestions of Local Catalan classes?

I am not out now until late August (Missed trip out last two weeks due to elderly cat health problem!!) but looking forward to getting my hands dirty!! if not too hot.
