Having recently driven over and loved the ability to get about the island in my own wagon (and the buses and taxis often being overloaded) I've come to the conclusion that I want to buy a little estate car.

I've found one I'm happy with and can pick it up at crimbo, british seller, trade, with warranty etc...

Only quandary is where to keep it in my absence.

Choices are

- to leave it on the street outside the house - but our street is tiny and no doubt it'll get side swiped. I also have to move sides every 6 months...

- pay to leave it at the airport storage (~€1000/yr off site under cover but need to confirm access fees). They do say they can do your ITV for you as a bonus.

- buy a garage - none in Pollenca, several in PP for €25K after fees and tax, one in Sa Pobla near the bustop (L301, L302 and A32 on req) so easy to get to Palma/airport.

- rent a garage - none in P or PP, some in Alcudia... or Inca (again good for bus/train to Palma).

Just wondered if anyone on here either had experience of any of the above, or has an unused parking space I can rent. I wouldn't be coming and going more than 6 times a year as I'll only store the car when I leave to return to UK... which will get less frequent as I slowly get better at retiring... (down to 3 day week now)

Cheers

Bob

How much do you want to pay to store in my garage Bobley....I need to decide if its worth the bother! :)

So, the present choices are

1. Store undercover near the airport and have valet parking bring it to/ from the airport when needed is €81/month.

2. Same as 1 but leave it outside, €55/month

3. Rent a garage. For €50-60/ month in Sa Pobla or Alcudia ( good option as it allows access to multiple buses to the airport). Also, garage may allow me to store the car with a kayak on the roof and/ or leave a few basic tools nearby to tinker with car...

Hi Bobley, did you manage to get your car storage sorted out ? We have a space that is not in use, as we always rent a car. You may or may not remember me and hubby David, as you came to view some steamer chairs we were selling many years ago.

LOL. Yeah. During this whole process, I was thinking of that enormous garage under your place with almost no cars in it!! I did speak to the solicitors about finding a garage down there as but it would've been €25K with all the taxes I passed. We'll save the money and just upgrade to a big house with garage.

Meanwhile @Rockape I'm really liking the Storage and Fly folks. I just msg them 48hrs in advance and they meet me at the front door of the airport. This was the chap checking my car as I walked into the terminal a couple of weeks ago. When I arrive, they text me to check I'm coming. I text back when I'm walking out of of passport and when I walk out of the front door the car drives into the drop off zone, a quick flash of my passport and off I drive. They wash it for €10, valet for €25 and ITV it for €150

(apologies to disabled people, I am indeed in the the blue zone for approx 1 minute, thats just their meeting point, not my choice)

That sounds great Bobley....but you didn't mention how much it costs to store? Do they pick up when you come back to the airport, or do you drop it somewhere else?

I'm nowhere near the stage where we would buy a car currently. I have worked out that for the amount of time I'm there, car hire is easily the best option. Despite being ripped by Record Go a couple of years back, I've started using them over the winter, taking photos on arrival and drop off. Our last trip in Feb was five days which cost £45 plus fuel and we had a decent Toyota Hybrid auto. Obviously annual excess keeps the costs down.

Oops. The price for a long term contract is €950/yr (€2.60/day) for indoor storage (and €675/yr to leave outside). Unlimited drop offs. You always drop off and collect at the same point right at the front door. Our car insurance is about €350 but it's inflated to €420 becasue my parents wanted to be on it (dads 78).

The main benefit for me is that with an estate I can do tip runs and buy large sheet materials from Plomer/Bauhaus etc so I can get on with a project I have in mind... and I can chuck my bike in the back go to Sineu etc for a dusty off road ride, stick my paddleboard on the roof so I dont need to deflate it to take home... and I've got my eye on a sea kayak in Trobadoo;)...

That all sounds great.....by the way, where exactly is the Tip and are there any rules? Sorry to derail the thread, but Ive looked for it before and didn't find it!

On the subject of kayaks, I have one of these: https://point65.com/en-gb/products/falcon

I bought it in Bauhaus a few years back. Single or double, breaks into three pieces and brought it back in the back of a Seat Ibiza.

The tip in Pollenca is here in the Poligon behind Lidl

I just turn up, the old boy lifts the barrier and lets you in (he takes note of your reg number). I generally point over my shoulder and say what it is in the back and he points at the appropriate skip. They take all sorts of things but are quite organised. If my eyes weren't deceiving me they have a special area to accept asbestos too.

Nice Kayak you have. Handy being disassembleable (?). The one I saw was a Rebel and at over 5m long it would be a right pain to get through the house... in fact it might be quite hard to drive through the streets with it on the roof

Yep... that might be fun!

Nice Kayak, but as you say....not ideal!

Thanks for the Tip location! (y)
