The estate of Ariant recovery consolidates black vulture

This year, 17 pairs of black vultures bred in the Majorcan nature. Onze of them still occupy the mythical coastal strip between farms and Ariant Ternelles in Pollença.

Since in 2012 the marriage Gildemeister donated to Wildlife Foundation mythical Mediterranean estate Ariant, the number of pairs of vulture on the farm has grown from one to five. Ariant is now a sanctuary for black vulture. A thousand acres and three miles of coastline where nature is rampant.

The farm is not open to the general public, but the volunteer work combined with environmental awareness and education. "We must limit the passage, there is no choice. After working for years against poison, quiet in nesting areas and food availability are key in preserving the vulture, "concluded Sanchez.

The Black Vultures are amazing birds with a wingspan of some two to three metres and can regularly be seen in the northern part of the Tramuntana Mountain range - if you are patient / lucky - and around PP itself. They are pretty well established though I believe they are also still part of a continual breeding programme at present.
They can sometimes be seen from the viewpoint on the way to Formentor, circling high in the sky before they glide effortlessly back along the mountains towards Cala san Vicente and further on towards Lluc. I have also had closer views when they have appeared from behind the hills / mountains near the reservoirs at Cuber and Gorge Blau on the road to Soller.
If you keep your eyes open they can also be spotted above PP itself, I’ve seen them on occasions when walking along the Formentor road towards the far northern end of PP and even from my sunbed when lying on the beach.
Also look out for Osprey which can occasionally be seen fishing in the bay at PP, a good place being at the end of the Pine Walk over the sea off the ‘base’ when the sea planes are not operating, or off the Albufereta Nature Reserve on the road to Alcudia. Whereas the Vultures are virtually all black / very dark brown, the Ospreys are more of a lighter brown in colour and very light brown / patterned on their underside.
** NPN - I gather that poison baits have sometimes been put out by landowners to eradicate vermin such as feral cats / dogs and on occasions this has been taken by the Vultures.
