HOLA!

Sadly just returned from our holidays so here’s my trip report:

No delays at Palma Airport arriving or departing.

Excellent communications with Jose for our booked Taxi to PP with Conde Taxis, 86E each way.

We stayed at a lovely Apartment off Avinguda Paris which was in a great location for beach and short walk to the marina.

To be highly critical the majority of Restaurants we ate in which were good but very few blew me away particularly considering the price with the odd exception. Here is a quick summary of where we ate:

Voramar 57 - bit chaotic due to being very popular including people waiting for take aways. Despite pre-booking weeks ahead for 9pm we like many others still had to wait 20 odd minutes a table to become availabe. Good Pizza (€16) on the Pine Walk beach. Both Mrs and Daughter enjoyed their pasta dishes.

Dos Kanallas by Totham was ok although the 60E for the Turbot for 2 people (served with mash potato..). for €60 I thought was very steep considering it wasn’t the biggest Turbot I’d ever seen.. Daughter enjoyed her Salt Baked Sea Bream (€30) which although still steep seemed far better value for the amount of fish she got off it. I guess the night was a little marred by the fact we couldn’t eat outside in their lovely spot by the Church overlooking the square due to the torrential rain that night.

Can Costa Alcúdia Old Town - very nice mixed tapas, good paella for 2 (€46) although most of the smaller shell fish such as clams and mussels were over cooked and barely edible as a result. Nice table outside in street, Alcudia Town is beautiful.

Q11 Pollenca Old Town - nice spot in square. We had mixed Mallorcan tapas for starters. Both Mrs & daughter had Sea bass (€29) I had the shoulder of lamb (€33) which was fine but really needed a sauce as on dry side.

Imperial tapas for lunch was ok. Went for the mixed tapas and also ordered the garlic prawns which were a staggering 22€ for a small dish containing 7 regular prawns. Had much better elsewhere for less.

Had a couple of much better tapas lunches at La Goleta Cafateria - their garlic prawns (€15) and Andalusian Calimari (€14) & Ham Croquettes (€9) I’d highly recommend. Nice spot too and good service. I believe their Tapas menu in the evening is more comprehensive so worth a try.

Laroc Pizza was good for reasonably priced pizzas (€13-15) just behind the Pine Walk.

Cellar La Parra - we shared 2 starters including Pica Pica squid (€9.75) and then had the Seafood Paella for 3 (€47.25). All good. Shared the traditional mallorcan dessert of Cardenal de Lloseta which I’d recommend.

La Font Del Gall in Pollenca was a bit of an experience to say the least - I pre booked weeks in advance with confirmation received but after arriving we were just left standing there like lemons and then when we eventually spoke to the manager he seemed very indifferent almost like he didn’t have a clue about our booking so we ended up getting shown to the only table that had not been made up for the evening. Then had to wait another 20 min for a drinks menu which I had to go and seek out, then another wait for a table cloth, glasses and cutlery to be laid. We probably would normally have walked off at this stage….However, I’m glad we didn’t as once our orders were finally taken the service did improve, was prompt and the food was excellent and actually in our Top 2 alongside Stay of evening meals. We shared two starters including a great fish ceviche (16.5E). I then had steak (39E) which was perfectly cooked. The Mrs had Seafood Paella (27.50) which she said was the best of the holiday. This was the night of the White Party (Marcha Fresca) which is on until 5am! but as we had the boat trip the next day we left before it really got going…

Our last night was spent at Stay which we had pre-booked asking for a waterside table. The only evening meal where the service was spot on. We were shown immediately to a very nice table. We shared 2 starters including Garlic Prawns (€16.5) followed by mains which we all enjoyed. My fillet of Turbot in white wine sauce (€32.5) was beautiful. Mrs had Calamari & fries (€24.80) & daughter had Sea Bass (28.50) which they really enjoyed. Rounded off with 2 excellent desserts - selection of sorbets (€9) and crème brûlée (€8.90) followed by complimentary drinks which I opted for the local Hierbas liqueur. Service was very attentive and spot on and the only place where I felt compelled to leave a tip. Total bill was €166.70 which I felt was reasonable for the service, location and a what was an excellent meal. This meal really did round off a great holiday despite a few iffy weather days.

We ate in a couple of times by buying fresh prawns and squid at the Eroski which had a great selection of fresh produce and reasonably cheap too.

Had a great Breakfast on market day at the Cultural Boutique on the square. Great location watching the world go by.

We weren’t overly impressed with the PP Night Market. Seemed far more choice when we went to Santa Eulalia a couple of years ago. Not sure the looky looky man stall selling fake designer handbags is really what a night market was meant to be for but seemed popular anyway. I think the Night Market should be for local artisans selling their handmade items. Nethertheless both the Mrs and Daughter bought some jewellery on the last night.

Boat trip to Cap Formentor was great - you can either book it with No Thrills excursions or direct, like we did, with the operator themselves at their office near Stay Restaurant. We stopped off for a quick 20min swim in a bay then onto the Lighthouse. Then on the return we took the option to disembark at Formentor Beach before getting the ferry back. Formentor Beach is indeed a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters however extremely packed & difficult to find any beach space with any shade although we managed to put our towels down in front of the €70-90 (!!) sunbeds much to the probably delight of their occupants. We felt like their poor relations all afternoon 😂. However, seeing a floating poo 💩 whilst swimming there did quite take it off the idyllic setting. I had a very similar experience in Santa Eulalaia Ibiza two years ago so it’s probably to do with the numerous Yachts rather than any nearby sewage pipes. Either that or it’s the same poo following me about…

For excellent cocktails in great locations I’d highly recommend Club Varadero (12E), Cappuccino Bar (15E!) & Illa D’or (10-12E). Although there are cheaper options but these were the best cocktails we had. I did enjoy the Bar directly on the Marina Roundabout which seemed popular with both tourists and locals. Great spot to enjoy a Beer or Cava.

Gripes - The Spanish do have an issue with dog poo. Pick it up! I even walked through the Gola nature reserve and even there it was noticeable.

I paid for virtually everything using my Revolut Card by pre loading Euros. Great Card.

ADIOS!

Fantastic report ,thank you

A great read, thank you. Been to most of those places and don’t disagree with a thing you’ve said. Come back soon!

'with No Thrills excursions'

😂

Interesting...thanks GJ. 👍

😂 or Frills even.
Also, a big shout out to the Payeras Bakery (great ensaïmadas, quiche and those small mallorcan pork pies) & Mallorcan Rose wine. We drank a fair few bottles with all our meals. Very nice indeed!

Great to read your report Jon. We too are just back and reading about your holiday experiences has inspired me to do the same – I apologise in advance for my ramblings!!!

There were seven of us this year so eating out took a bit of planning and was well complimented by some take aways to allow late days by the beach or pool. Also without a car we didn’t travel far from the pinewalk, but then for us we rarely feel the need these days.

For convenience Day 1 was an easy dine at La Roc where we all went for the pizzas which never fail to disappoint. We usually go for this on first night as easy to book on line whilst still back in blightly. Whilst sitting there we concluded that it had been a few years since we had dined in Coral so tried to book for Day 2 – only to find fully booked so deferred to Day 3. For those that don’t know either, Coral is a well established family restaurant (perhaps 1969) where you get reasonably priced Mallorcan food. La Roc is opposite, hence the name being a reverse of Coral. Both just off the Pine Walk.

As it turns out the weather was lousy for day 2 in any event so Chicken and chips from Al Fresco’s was a good choice, and is always a favourite with my family before heading out for ice cream, cerveza and cocktails.

Day 3 – evening meal at Coral comprised of garlic prawns, gazpacho, and many garlic breads. For mains I went for the Cod with tumbet which was great and the rest went for a choice of pork with tumbet, the slow cooked lamb, chicken breast with the pepper sauce and a beef casserole. It’s not a ’la carte but empty plates all round and excellent service.

Day 4 – the kids did there own thing so a bit of a date night for me and the boss to mark our wedding anniversary. As always, our special go to place is STAY – where we dined from the menu of the day – great food, great service and I still consider it to be great value.

Day 5 – it was a busy sporting day, with Newcastle on the TV at lunchtime, followed by the F1 and then the Lionesses. To keep things simple I cooked in the apartment – not everyone’s cup of tea on holiday, but as a one off I love to do it – stuffing everyone on bread and alioli followed by a my speciality carbona. Gives me a chance to shop for some nice wine too as part of my shopping trip. By the way, for the sporting entertainment we lunched with a few beers in the sports bar (part of the Mallorca Bike Hire business) on Carrer de Temple Fielding which is just up from Sail and Surf and does a great range of toasties and draught beers.

Day 6 – Steak night and our annual visit to Tollos. This is a family favourite as the grill selection is great – most of us went for fillet steak for mains with plenty of extra sides and sauces. We love the atmosphere in the restaurant and looking at the cycling memorabilia.

Day 7 – another family tradition is takeaway Paella for the entire family from Al Fresco. It started during Covid when we were desperate to support our favourite takeaway deli, but has remained a favourite where we collect the huge paella pan and share a family meal around the table, as if I had cooked it myself (I wish!) If I am honest, al Fresco is not quite the vibrant deli that it was for so long and if now owned by a local lad – the food is still great but the lack of quiches and salads in the deli bar area and the low stock of drinks and cakes in the fridges, suggest to me that the business is not as vibrant as it once was. We have always enjoyed takeaway sandwiches from there so would hate to see it disappear and so remain loyal customers.

Day 8 – at the request of the family we stayed at the beach all afternoon and into the evening – with no booking made we decided to dine on the beach, courtesy of pizzas from Voramar 57 – the former “Little Italy Restaurant” on the Pine Walk. One of my better ideas as everyone loved the pizzas and the extra time on the beach. Still managed to make it out for drinks at the Lemon Lounge and then onto Bony’s.

Day 9 – we all did our own thing which included 3 going to Pascalino’s for Chinese food, 2 going to the Himalyan Curry House, and the two elders sharing tapas at the IRU Restaurant for our first ever visit to a restaurant that we always walk passed remarking how busy it is! Good food and great for people watching!

Alas Day 10 was our last night and so another family tradition since the kids were little has been to finish off the holiday at Dakota on the front. The service it great and the kids have always enjoyed the experience, won over by the meat hanging on skewers or other tex-mex specials. For me, it is bang average at best and am working on the rest consenting to dropping this last night tradition and hope that we go someone new next year!

Overall another fab trip to PP where we found the Port to be vibrant and a joy to spend a family holiday together. Shout out too for the Spar behind the Mira Mar which is our go to for everything, the ice cream shop next to Casinet, and of course the Chinese supermarket which simple sells anything and everything.

@Joycey Thank you for taking the time to share your ramblings holiday experiences.
Hugely enjoyable read!

Great read, thanks. We walked past Tolos every evening whilst walking to and from our Apartment but never tried it so next time we will.
I emailed Al Fresco before our holiday to enquire about a take away Paella but never got any response so didn’t take it any further and never popped in as it was the other end of the resort.
Coral Bar looked great and very busy whilst we sat across the road at Laroc. Will try it next time 👍

Very interesting Joycey and lovely to hear that you all had such a great time. On Coral Bar: We have a place a couple of hundred yards from Suirrell, at the other end of the Port, so that was our 'go to' family restaurant, up until its being effectively destroyed and rebuilt, which is due for completion in 2026. So, have been to Coral Bar a few times now and love the food and value there. The tables are a bit crammed in outside and the view isn't the best, but the food, service and value are second to none.

Great reports from Gooner (hope you beat City to 2nd place lad...) and Joycey (we're not paying £150m for Isak)...love the tumbet in Coral but still prefer it in the Eroski cafe - best in PP for me!
For value and a great snack - try Bar Mora, full of locals and the staff are absolutely excellent.

Re Font de Gall - yep, sounds like you met Felix. He's a lovely guy who is a legend in his own mind. Sometimes you can end up sitting around a bit... I'm not usually in a hurry and he does bring us lots of extras. One time my wife asked if they had a particular desert and they went and sourced it from the Mares restaurant around the corner (same owner). Other times he's raided the drinks cabinet in the owners house next door.

The owner is now the present leaseholder for Club Pollença so I often end up asking them where they want me to eat...

Yeah that’ll be him. Quite a strange experience. I wouldn’t have minded but it wasn’t like we’d rocked up on the off chance. I’d booked weeks ahead and whilst everyone else’s table was nicely prepared we were left sitting for ages and ages like lemons. When I asked one of the other staff they just said you need to speak to the boss and didn’t want to get involved and muttered that there was only 3 of them and we could be waiting 2 or 4 hours. Jesus I thought.
However, we eventually ordered our food with Felix and it appeared quite quickly and was very very good. Didn’t get offered a limoncello at the end like everyone else and didn’t leave a tip either.
