Trip Report June/July 2016

We have recently returned from another wonderful holiday to Puerto Pollensa, which we thought was looking better than ever. We feel the wider pavements, cycle lane and one-way traffic along the front have improved the overall environment. Yes there was some snagging work going on and probably more to be done. It was good to see the Port so busy with people and would suggest that if you want to dine in a specific restaurant it is best to make a reservation in advance. We saw many disappointed people turned away from restaurants because they were full. And this was in June!

Puerto Pollensa has over the years created so many family memories which will last a lifetime for us. It was good to catch up with people we have come to call our friends. The quality of the area, the restaurants and wine and friendliness of the people ensure we will return for many years to come.

The following brief reviews of the restaurants we visited for dinner are our opinions based on our experience at that time and recognise that everybody may have a different experience.

Day 1: Dinner on the first evening is traditionally at Nico’s for our family and we saw no reason to vary that choice. A great welcome always awaits from Marcos, Fran and the team. The restaurant was particularly busy with locals which is always a good sign. We shared a starter of Spicy Chicken wings (Mmmm!) and both followed with Sirloin steaks which were delicious. Only Mr G had room for Apple Crumble and ice cream. Drinks were Beer, Water and a bottle of CAP Gaimes & Ribot Tinto from Santa Margalida. A great start to the holiday.

Day 2: El Posito where Toni and Miguel were as welcoming and enthusiastic about the food and wine as ever. We shared Squid in batter which was excellent. This was followed by Lamb with rosemary and John Dory with caramelised onions. We both just about managed almond cake with ice cream (Phew!). Drinks were beer, water and a bottle of Es Nines Tinto. The quality of the food and cooking is excellent.
Of course the added bonus is catching up with Lyn and Colin who were looking really well.

Day 3: Iru – Carlos and his team ensure a warm welcome and a lovely dining experience in a wonderful setting looking towards the mountains on the far side of the bay. We were treated to an Amuse Bouche of potatoes in sour cream, which was nicer than it probably sounds! Starters were Grilled Vegetables with Goats Cheese and Prawns in Garlic. Mains were Chicken Kebab and Turbot stuffed with Ham and Asparagus. Only one dessert of Crème Brulee. Drinks were beer, water and a bottle of Mortix tinto and a cortado.

Day 4: Cellar La Parra – If you have not visited here it is worth the effort. We were so glad we had booked a table inside in advance as there was not a spare seat to be had! It probably did not help the staff that a large group had turned up almost an hour late. But as usual Alex and his team coped admirably. Starters were Prawn Cocktail (the largest number of Prawns in a bowl ever!) and Chicken Croquets. Mains were Lamb Shoulder and Pork Fillet (both delicious and juicy!). We both then went for Almond Cake with ice cream. Drinks were Beer, water and the “famous” Jarra de la Cassa tinto. A great evening!

Day 5: Centric – After reading a couple of disappointing comments earlier on the web site we were interested to see how Centric would respond after picking up “1st Place” last year. We were not disappointed as the quality of the food, cooking and presentation was excellent. The attentive staff made sure we had a great dining experience. We were presented with an Amuse Bouche of Manchego Cheese with tomato jam, which was very simple but tasty. We started with Breaded Brie with jams and Gyozas (Japanese style stuffed pancakes). Mains were Duck Confit with orange sauce and De-boned Suckling Pig. Only one dessert of Artisan Apple Cake. Drinks were Beer, water, a bottle of Can Vidalet Tinto, a Calypso and an Irish coffee.

Day 6: Can Balache – With Kenny cooking to his usual high standard and Maureen providing her professional front of house service this was a really enjoyable evening.
Our starters were Onion Bhaji with Mango chutney and Chicken Tempura. Mains were Breast of Chicken with pepper sauce and Entrecote Steak. All cooked and presented to perfection. We could only manage to share one dessert and it had to be Kenny’s famous Caramel Shortcake and ice cream. Drinks were beer, cider, a bottle of El Coto tinto and a coffee. An excellent evening was rounded of listening to the excellent guitar playing of John Lynam at The Panorama.

Day 7: Los Faroles – This is a lovely restaurant where the staff are very friendly and helpful. Starters were Goats Cheese with caramelised onion salad and Soller Prawns which were sweet and delicious. Mains were Lamb Chops with Fried Eggs and John Dory. Only one dessert of Cardenal (similar to meringue with chocolate!). Drinks were beer, water, a Benjamin, a bottle of Macia Batle tinto, a coffee and a carajillo. Another lovely meal in nice surroundings.
