A translation of a report in the UH :-

The beach of Formentor loses two of its terraces classic : the restaurant and pizzeria. Costas has denied the authorization to occupy the public domain of both facilities, following the criteria of the Ministry of the Environment, which reported against it, as has recently happened with the terraces of the Capellans beach bars in Muro.

Yes, the terrace of the bar of the breakwater will foreseeably provide service, whose request for occupation is not processed by the Consistory. The councilor for Medi Ambient and Turisme de Pollença, Maria Buades, criticizes the "change of criteria" applied by Costas, which has been authorizing the terraces for decades. It also announces that they have submitted a complementary request for occupancy authorization with which they try to recover both spaces, taking advantage of the fact that they are processing authorizations for some businesses that until now were closed.

The three traditional terraces of the bars and the restaurant of Formentor were managed by the hotel itself. This summer, after the purchase of the hotel establishment by the investment fund Emin Capital, businesses also depend on this group, which has refused to comment on the matter.

The facilities that Costas has rejected are a 260-square-meter platform with 26 tables and 104 chairs and a 130-square-meter terrace with 15 tables and 60 chairs.

They wouldn't have as many customers anyway with the road closure :D

What about the people who arrive by boat from PP? Always busy and look as they spend in the tourist shop.

I was wondering if, when we come in August this year (and next!!!), would it be advisable to bring our own beach brollies and sunbeds with us!!

Only joking, but it would appear to me, that if I had been unfortunate enough to have won the brolly and sunbed contract for this season, I would probably have done a runner by now. Hard to see how they will make any worthwhile profit from it.

Any news on it anyone?

I was surprised how close the rows are to each other - 4 deep on a fairly narrow beach.
The straw shades have just arrived - the old style 'short' ones.

Of course, it’s not all about the money ..

They do look very close. Pre-Covid measurements.

That was my first thought this morning - they seem to be even closer that they usually are - and you would have expected them to be much further apart in view of the situation.

That’s crazy! They’re less people in PP than normal but more umbrellas then there have ever been... and as everyone else has said they’re so close together! I don’t understand when the beach is so wide on South Sandy Beach they don’t space them out?

Can’t imagine what they’re like the Pine Walk end as the umbrella’s there are usually practically touching

The sombreros/shades look smaller than normal down at the Llenaire end. Maybe it's just my eyesight?

Totally agree GG, i thought the same when looking at the webcam - very small hats on the brolly poles. Makes them look more like a carpet tack than a drawing pin.

On a more worrying topic however, I noticed in Mallorca Daily Bulletin that Puerto Pollensa has been awarded a Black Flag for Albercutx beach, due to sewage discharge. Can anybody tell me how bad it is, and if anything is likely to be done about it?

It was only a small area and has been since given the all clear from the relevant authorities.

With all due respect, that seems a very ‘quick fix’ to me. This issue has cropped up from time to time over the years (as well as the smell of sulphur along that beach, which I have witnessed) and I wonder if the entity that actually awarded the black flag is one if the ‘relevant authorities’ that has checked and given the all clear. Being cynical, it’s very easy for the local council and the ‘water board’ to say things are ok (as it suits their purposes) but is there any evidence that remedial work has been done and done properly. As we usually stay in the Boquer area, we normally use the beach between Coral/Laroc and just beyond the Pines so I would like know how the problem has been solved (for good)..

Andrew had this article recently, which might refer to the 'black flag'.

https://www.majorcadailybulletin.co...erto-pollensa-different-wastewater-spill.html

For a time on Thursday the Albercuix beach in Puerto Pollensa needed to be closed. Was this because of the not infrequent spills of wastewater, the source of which - as Mayor Cifre acknowledged on Thursday - is unknown? Not as such. It was caused by a failure of propulsion pumps. There was an electricity cut and this resulted in an escape of water from the sewage network ending up in the sea. Procedures were activated to solve the fault, and the problem was soon sorted out, albeit that the water would have to “self-purify”, to quote the mayor.

Picking up on this, the opposition Junts Avançam didn’t miss the opportunity to once more denounce the inaction of the Cifre administration in dealing with the general problem of spills.
