Dying palm trees

Anyone having palm trees on or near their property in PP should have them checked out for a parasitic beetle which is killing loads of trees in the area, the two old ones by st jordi hotel and the big one near grand cafe have all gone plus loads more around LLenaire and up to the pine walk. The beetle was previously only found around the Palma area, but now its up here and it can be devastating

Oh - I have a 90 year old palm tree in my garden and I did think it ws looking a little sad on my last visit. we had the lower branches cut back yesterday but I noticed this year it has been quite brown in areas. This is a worry - my tree is lovely (or was!!) I need to get this checked very quickly. Do you know if anything can be done should we have beetle problems or does that mean the end of our tree?

sounds like its already too far gone, but best to get a local tree person like Forcat or somebody to check it out

So is that why the 2 trees just up from the Rosa Blanca were cut down ? (they were gowing on the road islands) I was really disappointed when they were given the chop.

We were very sad to hear that the trees on our island had gone Miriam. It won't ever be the same.

woooooooo, steady, all things change... it is the way of life... which is why 'life' is so precious. And 'natural' change is better than man made.
BUT... let us hope the 'cooncil' will rally round... as they have in the past ( the big storm that took out all the trees and many other things too ! ) and plant up some newbys

...and aint it just my luck.. palm tree parasites!...now had it been PINE tree parasites, I might have got my veiw back in PP! only half kidding...cos I really do like trees

The beetle is a "Picudo Rojo" or "Red Weevil" and is decimating palm trees all over southern Spain.

Have heard that there are about 20 to go in the Gotmar area. Eleanor unfortunately there is no saving them once they have the beetle,cutting them down is the only course of action sorry.

Saw a few had been cut down around Llenaire near some villas and thought it was for other reasons, its a shame. Hope they can be replanted.

All the trees I'm afraid - the 'local' we spoke to tried to make it lighthearted by saying pines would be planted in the place of palms and Palma would be re-christened Pine-a

I'm so sad about this. I am especially sad if my tree has been infected. It does sound as if that is the case and we are in Gotmar too.

We actually had our pool built around the palm tree and have been so careful in looking after it. Fingers crossed - somehow I think I need to cross my toes as well!

Well that doesnt make for a happy read at all does it? If its been going on for so long and they still havent found a solution its a very worrying situation.

It will be very sad if all the palms along the sea front have to be felled. What could replace them that would not run the risk of re-infestation? The article doesn't seem to have any positive conclusions as of yet and It looks as though this could well be a global problem.

Would be a real shame if the Palm trees on the front were lost, it does not seen so long since the Palms at the the marina/carpark were planted and you had to duck to aovid brushing your head!

I don't think it is confined to pine trees. We lost a large date tree this year from a parasitic beetle. It was only when we chopped it down that we saw the tell tale beetle holes. We have also been losing geraniums and wonder if that is what is killing them too.

Hi Alcanadakid it isn't the pine trees that are infected it's the palm trees.
