Exchange rate

Looks like the exchange rate is moving in the right direction again. Just checked and it's now over 1.18 Euro to the pound (bank rate).

Think I may get some on the way home tonight in case the election results cause it to slip a little. Got some yesterday at nearly 1.13, should be even better today.

It may just get me another couple of olives in Stay!

Don't rush cos a lot of money is pouring back into UK gilts ( and future sterling value ) . View of the relative economies ( i.e. who is in the biggest do doos !!! ) between the southern Europe Eurozone and the UK is coming under a lot of scrutiny at present. Some economists believe the " true value" of the GBP should be nearer E 1.38 but of course that depends a lot on you guys , back in the UK , chosing a stable government .

Bonyladette and I got our postal vote away last weekend for the Monster Raving Lunatic Party ( Bet they don't get many of those !!!! ).

Indeed it was better I got 1.15 and a half. Extra slice of bread as well! Not a major player just getting some spendies together. Still got some in reserve though.

Just checked the interbank rate and, as forecast, with a hung parliament, has now dropped to 1.14. Shame as it was getting better by the day.

I would imagine once the parties sort themselves out the rate will start climbing again (hopefully).

Seems to have steadied at 1.149 now. Obviously cushioned by what's happening elsewhere, i.e. Greece etc, and low confidence in the Euro. Bigger do-dos as Bonyslad has so eloquently said.

Crown Currency are offering 1.19 on pre booked currency for July.

I wish I had waited - its one of those "shall I or shan't I" situations.

I settled on 1.14.

I think the 1.18 is the bank rate, i.e. If your changing thousands etc. The tourist rate is lower between 1.13 - 1.15 so I would be happy with 1.14. I'm out in PP from 06/06/10 and will take 1.14 in fact I think I'll take a trip to M&S this evening

Have a look on Money Saving Expert: Consumer Revenge - Credit Cards, Shopping, Bank Charges, Cheap Flights and more and select the travel section. Here you can put in you're looking for cash and then state the currency and amount. You'll get access to a table showing everyones rates and charges etc so a good comparison site.

I ordered ours from the Post Office yesterday and it's waiting for me to go and get it right now. I'm waiting for my bodyguard first though

I used a Nationwide Flexi Account debit card last year and hit the hole in the wall whenever I needed cash. I got whatever the official rate was that day (not the tourist rate) and there were no withdrawal charges or commissions. I worked out that I was getting at least 5% more than if I used an ordinary UK debit card and at least 6 cents more to the £ than I would have got at the currency exchangers in the port. It adds up over a fortnight.

Last time I negotiated it was lots of freshly brewed coffee on offer along with the odd bacon sarnie thrown in.

Re the Nationwide card. It's my preferred currency for paying any hotel bills as has been said, it's commission and charge free. On that site I linked, there is a whole section on getting your holiday money to work for you the best way. It's well worth a read.

Rangers: I've used Crown Currency (or at least their parallel company Travel Money Services) on numerous occasions. Money is delivered by Royal Mail, special delivery bang on the date they promise. Never had a problem. The more you buy in advance the better the rate you get. I just got 1.1845 for delivery first week in July but you can get 1.165 for first week in June.
