Our pool constantly has a high PH. We mix in lots of PH Minus, but much more than others we know.
Anyone got any ideas what could be cause?

Hi Dave,
Not sure of the exact figure as my pool test kit gives a range of colours (red) and it is always on the top limit. I add a lot of PH minus every day - 8 cups for a 50m3 pool. The person who looks after our pool says it uses much more than other pools use. Chlorine level is about right.
Any ideas are gratefully received.

It is likely to be due to the high cal content in the water - do you keep topping the pool up maybe??

Don't know what the ph of the makeup water is. Is it very alkaline. Is there a high makeup. Is concrete in good condition. Is the concrete damaged . Is the coating intact.
Is the strength of your ph minus correct and made up properly.

We have a "disappearing edge" pool which drains into an concrete overflow tank in the pump room. If this is not sealed correctly, could that be the cause? If it was, then surely over time all the nasties would leech out or am I too optimistic?
Make up water is from the mains and to a ball valve in the overflow tank and as that is automatic I don't know have much goes in.
PH Minus is bought from a variety of sources and a variety of brands. I have been suspicious that some brands are stronger than others.
I am starting to measure the quantity and reckon I am currently putting 2kg (a quarter of a tub) of PH Minus into the pool every day.

My father who was a chemist invented and patented the DPD Method for testing the Ph in swimming pool water.Unfortunately he is no longer with us and I am an Accountant so also can't help.Best of luck in sorting out your problem.

It could be that the concrete in your sump is corroding.Can you look at it to tell its condition? It may leech out calcium compounds causing high alkalinity.
Also if your make up rate is high as JMD says this could be causing it. I assume your water is metered. Do you know if you are using much more recently? .
I don't know what type of pH paper you are using but please check that red is alkaline. In normal litmus paper red is acid. Check with diluted vinegar.
You could try a quick test on your tap water and if possible try to tell if the pH of the sump water is higher than tap and pool water.
Another longshot - could any water be running into the pool from anywhere else from grass watering etc.

Thanks for your help. I use the dropper method to check ph and chlorine - 5 drops each and then compare it to a colour scale on the side. The overflow tank could be part of the problem, but I have just tested the tap water and that indeed is high in ph, so that could be the problem.
I can't quantify the amount of water used for make up water as the sprinklers distort the picture. We always use a lot at this time of year.

You may be interested to know that my father's DPD test kits were used to check the water in the pool for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
The patents have long run out now and so have the Royalty cheques unfortunately(lol)
