We had a fantastic time this year, it was our second so we know what to expect and managed to enjoy it even more than before I think, we got to follow the judges around with the band, we saw the devils and imps who where really quite frightening and saw nearly all of the fires. we had a great time walking around and sitting outside Nostalgia watching the Fat Cats which was a highlight.
The morning of the tree climbing was a bit damp, but it certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the locals who seemed to throw themselves into it even more, letting their hair down and having a fantastic time.
The tree was massive this time and that, plus the numerous drink stops made the trip around the town seem even longer than before, any idea of a timetable just goes out the window.
When they final arrived with the tree in the square they certainly made sure they greased it this year, maybe too much, and when they finally started climbing it was clear it would take longer than before.
It must of took a couple of hours to climb it and it was great to see all the different techniques used to try and climb it, they managed to get so far but the grease always stopped them, it was good to see girls trying as well, one was very good and was pushing and giving as good as she got. The tried to use the rope must to the annoyance of the crowd, but they finally relented and wrapped it around to give them some grip otherwise they would still be climbing it now, the guy finally climbed it but still had the last 10 foot to climb unaided and if you consider he must have been 20 meters off the ground it was still some feat.
So once again a fantastic spectacle, if you haven't seen it you should try at least once, the atmosphere around the port is amazing with everyone so happy and up for a good time, and with all they are going through at the moment who can blame them.
