Anglican Church told to find new place of worship in Port of Pollensa

The Anglican Community in the north of the island were in shock yesterday after the local Catholic Church withdrew permission for them to worship in Puerto Pollensa´s Catholic Church.
The Anglican Chaplain, Revd. David Waller, read out the following statement to the congregation in the Port of Pollensa on Sunday:

“It is with sadness that I have to announce to you that the local Catholic authorities have withdrawn permission for us as an Anglican community to continue to use these church premises to hold our services. We have been given approximately six weeks to find an alternative place of worship. I am awaiting receipt of a letter from the Bishop of Majorca confirming this, but this letter has not yet arrived. It is my hope that this will provide more detail of the reasons behind this decision.

“The Church Council is meeting this week and will discuss the options for alternative venues that are before us as a Church community for the immediate future. These discussions will be shared with the congregation at the earliest opportunity so that we can gain from the wisdom of many living here locally as we face the time ahead, together.
“This is a challenging time for us as a Church. The future may seem uncertain but we are a congregation strong in faith. We may therefore continue to take comfort in the presence of God with each of us, and with us all, as we move forward.

Yes I had heard talk of this and feel sorry for the people that attended the Anglican services and of course anyone who was planning a wedding/blessing there, hopefully another venue can be found quickly.

We're supposed to have a blessing in St Andrews next Sept! We have already paid for the Church, does anyone know if we can still have a Catholic ceremony there(we're Catholic anyway but the blessing was arranged through Irene from the Anglican Church)

As this has only just been announced i think we will have to wait and see what actually happens but Michelle i would suggest you email Irene as she might have more info .

It's a great shame if this does come to pass, as seems likely from the announcement above. When walking across 'the square' on a Sunday morning about 9-30 'ish' during holidays it is a great pleasure to hear singing from the Anglican services held during that time (9am 'til 10am). So much so that I have attended a service at the Church during my hol's and it was a most pleasant and enlightening occasion. The congregation seem to be a dedicated bunch of people and I understand that they do much for charity in the PP area. Many people on holiday as well as 'locals' attend the services. Good luck to them in their search for a new venue if this is the way it has to be.

Thank you Sparky, I had already enquired about this church after we found out we couldn't have our blessing in the Calvari Chapel at the top of the 365 steps due to refurbishments, there is no agreement to hold Anglican ceremonies in the church in pollensa(I wonder about Catholic blessings though?)

Irene has emailed back, she said that I shouldn't worry and she is sure that all weddings/blessings for next year will be fine. She has also passed my email onto the Anglican Reverend David Waller in Palma so hopefully he can shed some light.

Mickey, if you don't get through to the Tourist Board number, you could try this one. Its really difficult to find any info directly from the church itself, but getting through to the sites that deal with them should be able to point you in the right direction for the info you need.

Michelle that's good news, lets hope all goes according to plan for you .
As for a Catholic blessing, i suppose it would be fine as you are Catholic but i wonder what language the service would be in, does anyone know if the local priest speaks English? .

I don't think he speaks English but not 100% sure. The Anglicans are still hopeful of resolving the problem. So as said earlier might be best to wait and see.
For anyone interested there will be a Songs of Praise on the Beach at Tamarells this Sunday.

The article in the print edition of the Majorca Daily Buletin goes further in explaining its belief as to why the local Catholic Church has evicted the C of E from its home of 27 years. Not very 21st century!

"Unofficially, the Bulletin has has learnt that the decision by the local Catholic Church could have been taken because the new Anglican Vicar in Pollensa is in a civil partnership."

It then has the following editorial:-

"THE Anglican Church has always enjoyed a good relationship with their Catholic counterparts in Pollensa. I am sure that the present dispute can be resolved. I would call on both sides to sit down together and try and reach an accord. We’ve all heard the gossip which has been circulating in the north of the island for some time but now is the time for dialogue because it would be a great pity if the local Anglican community lost the place they have called home for the last 27 years."

Reverend Waller from the Anglican Church in Palma emailed me this morning, they found out last friday so are still a bit shocked, so far it's only the main service on Sundays that has officially been asked to move, so he thinks weddings will still be ok but will find out from the Catholic Church today. It's such a shame and I hope things can be resolved.

"The Anglican Church in Pollensa needs our help in finding a new home..."

THE Anglican Church in Pollensa has started the search for a new home after they were told that they would be unable to use the Catholic Church in the port any longer. They have been given six weeks to find a new home. I am aware of the reasons behind the decision but suffice to say that it is a result of an alleged dispute over the appointment of a new vicar in the area. While it is a great shame that after 27 years the Anglican community have been told to find a new place of worship I am convinced that an accord will be reached. In the meantime the Anglican Church in the north of the island needs our help to find a new home and I am sure that Bulletin readers will lend a helping hand. As the Anglican Chaplain David Waller has said it is a difficult time for the Anglican community in the north of the island but at the same time I believe that the congregation has the necessary courage to overcome this problem and find a new venue so that Anglican worship in the north of the island can continue. The so-called “Anglican Church problem in Pollensa” has become a major talking point amongst the British community across the island but now the time has come for action. The problem is simple. The Anglican Church, unless they hear otherwise, needs to find a new place of worship sooner rather than later and as a community I would urge everyone to try and help. The Church in Pollensa does a fantastic job and deserves our support.
