Air Traffic Control Strikes

There will be no air-traffic controllers' strike during August. The union has decided today that it would be prejudicial to tourism and hopes that it can return to negotiations with AENA.

That is really good news.
We have had a cancellation for a weeks rental of our villa 28th August as the people just couldn't face the risk. - That was their reasoning anyway! Or a good excuse for them!

Oh! Gawd!!! Could it be September then!!
Really great news for all August visitors. :)
Might put me off my little extra visit in Sept.:(
Any news for Sept. Andrew?

If they have really postponed it because of the effect on tourism why don't they wait until the end of October? ;).

Well hopefully they might Sparky....but even better lets hope they solve their issues and there is no strike at all.....if only we had a crystal ball!!;)

No mention of September in the releases today. It is still a possibility, I guess.

Thank Goodness

Thank goodness the strike has been called off now I can look forward to going tomorrow.
Thanks for an informative web site I have been busy reading everything over the last few weeks.

The DB of yesterday suggests that the unions are willing to talk to AENA but tomorrow is D day as far as decisions on strike action. See the article in Daily Bulletin Online.

With respect, Lollipop, the Bulletin's website is always out of date as it gives news from the previous day. The Thursday decision day was brought forward to yesterday, with the result that the strike is off and today the two sides are meeting again, without the pressure of a strike being called, to try and arrive at a definitive conclusion to negotiations.

On a simlar note unfortunately:

"Strike misery threat to UK holidaymakers

Unite the union will announce today whether it will bring six UK airports to a standstill later this month, causing chaos for hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers.

The union has called on more than 6,000 workers at all BAA-owned airports to vote in favour of strike action in a dispute over pay.

The result of the ballot of airport workers, including essential staff such as firefighters, security guards and engineers, will be revealed this afternoon.

BAA says that if strikes go ahead it will have to close Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton airports.

Meanwhile Spanish air traffic controllers have called off a planned three-day strike next week.

The controllers’ union UNSCA postponed the strike over pay and conditions following an outcry from Spain’s tourism industry, but it says workers may strike in September unless its dispute with the airports authority AENA is resolved. "

This is only my personal opinion.

It begs the question, do none of these people realise there is still a worldwide recession on?. Before retiring i worked for a private American company in the UK for 37 years, it was non union, but when times were good i was well rewarded. However in lean times i accepted that pay rises would have to be lower or even non existant, this was neccessary to keep the business viable and also so i would still have a job.
While the general public rely heavily on those in the service sector, those that work in the industry also have to rely on public sympathy and support, without it they are sunk, they should be very careful when biting the hand that feeds them. :(

Breaking News:

BAA airport staff vote for strike action Workers at airport operator BAA have voted three-to-one in favour of strike action that could close Heathrow and five other UK airports.

The ballot came after the Unite union rejected a 1% pay offer from BAA.

BAA has confirmed its airports will have to close on any strike days, as essential staff including firefighters are due to take part in the walkouts

Keep watching the news guys...

Air traffic control strikes

hope it is all sorted by the 31st as we are on our way to PP

Sparky, Cloud cukoo land is the place they occupy. Some people accept 10% REDUCTIONS in order to keep their job or (more importantly) their colleagues don't lose theirs!
Strikes do have a long lasting effect, arguably Majorca has never fully recovered from the coach drivers fiasco of a few years ago.

Just been looking at El Pais online and a spokesman for the Air Traffic Controllers union has stated that there will be no strike in August or later. It looks as though we're in the clear, apart from BAA. Thank goodness I travel from Gatwick.
