Baggage allowance

Last week I received my flight tickets. My joy however was shortlived as I read the small note which accompanied the tickets explaining that from 1st May XL airways only allowed 15Kgs of free luggage. However I could up this to 20Kgs for a payment of £15 each.

This is despite the fact that I bought and paid for the tickest in August 2007 and at that time luggage allowance was listed as 20Kgs.

Ah well console myself with the thought of 3 weeks in PP this year in an apartment on the Pine Walk overlooking the sea.

Others who booked with XL may have this little surprise to come!!!

It's obviously because of the sharp rise in fuel - do they give an explanation?

I added an extra bag for our flight to Mallorca with Ryanair and it cost £16. I just wonder how high the prices will rise if the cost of fuel continues to rocket (no pun intended!)

You can buy a handy little luggage scale from Amazon (and elsewhere probably) which I'm going to invest in before the holiday.

They range from about £8 up to about £15.

Can anyone inform me if any big stores in the UK sell this luggage scale...Thanks.

PWS.

Jane note this will not allow you extra weight still only 15kg per person and you can't share i.e 2 x 20kg and 2 x 10kg you can take extra bag but still have to pay for extra weight. Sorry

Thanks Snowy...yes I know it will only give us one extra bag. Originally I only added two 15kg bags but it was worrying me that we wouldn't have enough for two weeks - I really don't want to be washing and ironing every day on holiday!

And I'm well aware that Ryanair won't allow pooling between the four of us, which I think is ridiculous. Ho hum!!

Next year I'm going to refuse to fly and try and persuade hubby to drive instead!

when i pre booked flights (outgoing with monarch and return with first choice) i decided not to pay up front for baggage meaning we had to pay £10 at Luton and 15 euros in Palma. But we didn't get charged whatsoever so ended up saving us a fair bit, especially as there were 8 of us in our party.

That's really interesting, I wonder if it's another airline rip off. Does anybody else have any similar experiences?
I never book seats together but up till now have always got seats together without being charged any extra.

All this talk of allowances has made me check ours, with easyjet we still get 20kg each, not sure if we had to pay extra at the time of booking.

Yes it's 20kg with easyjet as one of our party flew home with them. you do pay extra at time of booking as all these airlines these days make you pay now (short haul). you have the option of taking it off if you are just going to take hand luggage and then if you decide to take luggage you can pay at the airport but like I said, we didn't get charged at all!!
