Having got up nice and early on Friday (11 am), feeling a little bit low after missing the meeting Thursday night, we started off on a misty morning hunt for Can Vidalet. We had tasted their lovely Chardonnay at Bogavante Restaurant in Puerto De Alcudia just a few weeks before (on the night we heard that our son had been saved by his mobile phone taking the force of a bullet when he had chased a robber!), and had been determined to find the bodaga. We followed Quelys directions - albeit backwards as we were approaching from PP - and using a bit of judgement, as there were no signposts at all the "being made" roundabout, we found the signpost to the winery. The bumpy track led us expectantly down to ........ closed gates! No amount of peering longingly through had any effect and we were just about to drive away when the Can Videlet van drew up and informed us that unfortunately they were closed as they were having an inspection from the wine council and would be open again on Monday. So off we went and bought a washing machine instead - as you do!
Monday morning, after one of the day and night storms that knocks out reception from the tv and keeps you awake all night, we made our way again to Can Vidalet. This time the bumpy track was strewn with olive tree branches being cut down, but the gates were open!! Driving through presented us with a lovely view on the left of the vinyard - now minus grapes as these are harvested in August and September - and a lovely backdrop of the mountains. C'an Videlet is a young winery, founded in 1996, so there are no dark dank caves, just a clean and modern and friendly atmosphere, run and managed by two germans with a new spanish lad learning the ropes. After explaining how we had arrived at their winery, we then tasted their blanc de blanc and merlot. They also make a cabernet sauvignon and syrah cabernet sauvignon. After dutifully sipping, spitting and pouring away the others - I somehow forgot the etiquette and swallowed the large tasting glass of the 2004 Chardonnay!! They are intending to start making a Cava in 2006 which will be ready for 2007. Getting a little carried away - or a little light headed - hubby enquired about shipping wine home but unfortunately (!) they are still too small to deal with shipping etc. They had sold most of the Chardonnay anyway and only had 60 bottles left - so we bought 10% of their stock! Oh, and a T-shirt!
Promising to return in the future, we headed on back to Llenaire to put at least 2 bottles in the fridge for the rest of the week and hopefully some with stay corked long enough to reach home!
Update - on driving back to airport we realised that we had left all the bottles in the kitchen!! More to drink after Christmas I suppose!!
