In defence of some of the lycra clad cyclists Not all. I can say in the last three hours alone I have dodged natives on the pavements on bikes, holiday makers that when they were the last time on a bike it was pre decmalisation and forgot they were abroad plus were on hire bike so that the brakes are continental setting not english. And to top it off a weaving mobility chair user on the wrong side of the road oblivious to any and everyone.I wish I had time to stop and video him and post here.

I might be wrong here, perhaps the law has changed recently, but I did read some time ago that in Spain, where there is no dedicated cycle path, then cyclists are allowed to share the pavement but must not exceed the speed of the adjacent pedestrians.

Both my wife and I are keen cyclists and we agree with the comments posted above. Something has got to be done to control these mass packs of brainless idiot who appear to think that they own the road and can do whatever they like with no consideration for others. We find it it amazing that although they are probably the most vunerable of all road users a large number of them think they are invunerable.

Amongst the things that need to happen are -

Break up the large packs into small groups of max 8.
Make it illegal to use the road or pavement where there is a cycle path.
Make single file riding compulsary on narrow lanes or where there is a solid white line.
Make riding more than 2 abreast illegal.
Enforce the law that says bikes must have a bell (and use it!)

I'm sure there must be many more suggestions?

Its about time the island started using some of the money they are making out of cyclists into controlling them!

Just to add I am not a lycra clad cyclist, I am a bare foot, shorts and a tee shirt cyclist, I agree as far as I know it is not illegal to cycle along the promenade, as long as it is done safely, i.e. slowly! Also we have had this discussion before, pedestrian areas like the Pinewalk do not mean pedestrians only, as far as I know it is not 'illegal' to cycle along it, the wiki definition is as follows, - 'Pedestrian zones have a great variety of attitudes or rules towards human-powered vehicles such as bicycles, inline skates, skateboards and kick scooters. Some have a total ban on anything with wheels, others ban certain categories, others segregate the human-powered wheels from foot traffic, and others still have no rules at all'

Guys,

I have cycled in the area, on and off, since the late 1990's, i also help run one of the largest and longest established Cycling Clubs in SW London.

We insist that all our members obey the Highway Code and show respect for other users.

Unfortunately, we can't follow all our members around to enforce it.

However, when we get an e-mail of complaint, we do look at it and reply to the complainant. If we think it is a justified complaint we will try and make some effort to find out who the miscreant was and either warn him, or on second offence, expel him.

From the description above, if we got this complaint, we would be very concerned.

I will send an e-mail to the Chairman of High Wycombe Cycling Club from our Club's e-mail address addressing the issue. Other Clubs complaining should certainly cause them to take the issue seriously.

Chris

Thanks Chris. I did write email the club but as yet had not received a reply. It may well help coming from you. The safety to others is an issue which needs addressing before someone is badly hurt.

There is a road sign at the beginning of the Pine Walk at the roundabout and another at the other end before Corb Mari showing a cycle in a red ring amongst others!!
In the UK this means no cycling.

In the 80's and 90's we hired bikes and obeyed these very signs as did others. If you didn't people were not long in pointing them out.

Not only does this happen in PP but in the UK as well. Now when I ride a bike I ride it on the road where it should be and where there is one in a cycle lane.

You're quite right, they're the worlds latest road menace. Akin to all those drivers who think it's okay to drive and text at the same time.

Oops, I digress somewhat.....

Looks like a group of cyclists blatantly ignoring a 'no entry' sign at Tamarells this morning:confused:

Hi Gordo, thanks for that, I have never seen these signs, not that we cycle down there anyway, I think the issue is access to the hotels along there where the cyclists stay, they need to use the back road for access then!

Hopefully once the road markings are changed and the cycle lane installed this will ease the problem, until they do, people are still going to park on the sea side of the road and not the other!

The 2014 Google streetview image shows the sign (including adjacent non-lycra cyclist) ... ;)

No Cycling signs somewhat small methinks?

I do like to see cyclists around the island in general but 'definitely' not on the Pine Walk where they can (and do) become a nuisance.

The small size is a valid point I have to admit as is the fact that there's only one at each end from memory.
However, you have to be fairly stupid and/or ignorant to carry on cycling when it's clear there are people about on foot. Particularly a lot of "older" ones and children along with disabled people.
It's all about common sense and consideration really. Something many cyclists seem to be leaving behind.

Nobody does a witch hunt or generalisation quite like pp.com.

The anger is so evident with people threatening violence on people who bring much needed revenue to the port. Calm down folks, the cyclists are a great bunch of lads.

I would not call this a witch hunt or generalisation Hoopy, members are merely voicing their concerns about some cyclists who are not respecting the rules. We all know that they are in the minority and nobody is threatening violence.

Most cyclists are great and are very welcome in the Port and across the island but those few bad ones are causing major concerns for public safety.
