Delays checking in at Palma - the dreaded excess baggage!

On our recent return flight with BMI Baby we were told we had excess baggae and had to pay over 100 euros or else we wouldnt be allowed to fly. We disputed this at PMI and BMI Baby arranged for our bags to be reweighed once we arrived back at EMA. Turns out we were 1k under our allowance, but we now have to wait on a refund! There was no opportunity to have the bags reweighed at PMI, which would have saved a lot of stress and hassle for all concerned! So, worth disputing if you are in any doubt....

we have just come back (apart from a 2 hr delay) we had no problems at all with Easyjet...very efficient and quite chatty..With regards to the 1 piece of handluggage that alcanadakid referred to ....that has been in force for some time and is clearly stated on the confirmation...there is no weight restriction though and they do say you can put a handbag inside the had luggage..this is what i did and just took it out when i got through to departures

Baggage Allowance

We flew back home on 16 July with Air Europa. When we arrived at the check in desk the conveyor belt taking cases through to loading bay had broken down, so our five suitcases were labelled and put through without being weighed. Also at Palma security we had needles (syringes) and liquids in our hand luggage and no one asked us for any information regarding this. But at our home security we explained what we had in our hand luggage they still took us aside and checked our bags again and we had also handed them a letter from the consultant explaining why we had the medicine etc., in our hand luggage. Looks like there is no consistency at airports.

Hi GL . It would be good to know the answers to these questions. To pay excess is far from cheap. A good money spinner??? I agree the scales should be checked.
Problem is that it is embarrassing if you are in a long que. Typical English - I don't like to cause a scene and question. As said you can't really win anyway! Ryanair said we were 1 kilo over and intended to charge. We knew we were well under as we have a travel scale which we always use to ensure we are not even close to the limit. We questioned their scales and were told in no uncertain terms that they were correct. No way did I intend to pay so as embarrassing as it was, I opened the case and removed items to place into my near empty hand luggage bag. - So stupid!
If this happens again, I will stand my own - nice to know there is redress in the UK though.
BUT it shouldn't happen - those scales need to be checked on a regular basis.

I must admit to being an EasyJet fan. I tend to book "speedy boarding", which I find works well, particularly at check-in....where a separate desk(s) is always open, at Liverpool and Palma. This means not having to join the awful queue for the check-in desk to open two hours before the flight - how I HATE that!

Good old EasyJet also allow the baggage allowance of 20Kg each to be aggregated across our family of four, and as I'm always below the limit and my daughter-in-law always over, this means no penalties!

So many airlines are reducing their baggage limits - BMI Baby used to be may favourite airline from Manchester, until they cancelled our June 2009 flights and tried very hard not to refund credit card charges - we won through in the end - but it was a bit of a fight! I understand that BMI Baby is now down to 18Kg.

Jet2 have recently bucked the trend. Last year the allowance was 18kg. From March 2009 the limit has been raised to 22kg spread over a maximum of 3 bags. Disappointingly its cabin baggage, has one of the smallest bag sizes of 50x38x26. The weight limit is a pretty much standard 10kg.

edit: been round the suitcase/cabin bag shops in PP and John Lewis's! No one seems to make a bag that conforms to Jet2 requirements. Grr!

Jet2 did increase the baggage allowance but from what I remember when I last booked, the had increased the baggage checking in charge, obviously realised that we were managing to hit the 17/18kg, and so by increasing the charge, they were in effect, getting the excess payment - or am I being cynical? And yes, their hand luggage size is a joke - they allow you 10kg but as you are so restricted as to what you can take on board - it would make more sense to reduce this to say 7kg and increase the checked in - but perhaps I am being naive? I bought my hubby a gorgeous leather cabin holdall a few years ago (after checking all the sizes - Jet 2 inluded) - guess what, the first time he tried to take it, they had reduced the size - without telling anybody till they got to the airport!! You can't win!

I thought their foldaway cabin bag looked very useful although if you load it up with 10kg, it may get very heavy with no wheels but worth having as an extra cabin bag that you can put inside your bag.

Everyone looks like a Mary Poppins when we actually get onto the plane! Its one bag out of another, one up in the overhead lockers, one under the seat, then we finally sit down!

Hi Clinkham - that is generous indeed! FlyGlobespan only allow 20kg per person which INCLUDES hand luggage AND your bloomin' handbag! And it is £8 per bag you put in the hold - each way.

Not really Bella - we paid £540 for 2 adult returns in summer - neither date was a Saturday.

But they were good times and it is the price you pay flying from scotland I suppose.
