Another battle for the heritage of the Port has erupted.

The Costas Authority, with legal responsibility and jurisdiction for the coast, has ordered that ‘unlicensed’ jetties around the bay should all be demolished notwithstanding that, in most cases, they have been present for a lifetime or more and contribute enormously to the natural beauty of the Port and Bay.

Work to demolish one of the jetties commenced yesterday on the insistence of the Costas resulting in the Ajuntament (Pollensa council) intervening seeking to prevent this on several grounds. I very much hope they succeed in blocking the Costas in yet another destructive act.

Have they given any reason for the removal, apart from being unlicensed ( easily fixed - just license them, after whatever remedial work required - if any - is completed ). I agree, that they have been an important part of our view for 30+ years now, and we will miss them greatly. It's a bit like removing the fences from Aintree and expecting the punters to turn up as usual!! I just cannot see any advantage to be gained by anyone, either in Government or not, by removing them. Very sad days!! :confused:

According to the Ajuntamnent it’s simply for be being unlicensed which, when they (the Costas) have revoked licenses (like the for the Capri), is like stacking the cards.
 
I don’t know what the Costas’ thinking is, but in my opinion these jetties look a great deal more attractive with tables/parasols etc than just great empty slabs of grey concrete!

It is a good thing that the Costas are not in charge of Venice or they would fill in the canals to make way for cars!
 
Does anyone know if the Costas Authority has published a plan/list of the jetties they propose to demolish ?
 
speaking to the head waiter at cappuccino last week as they didnt have there tables and chairs on the front area of the sis pins , he said said by next year that will be beach again in his words , which they are very dissapointed at , but you never know things may change !
 
If you Google ‘Mallorca Costas Authority’ the first hit is a report in the Majorca Daily Bulletin mentioning the transfer of some responsibilities from the Costas Authority to the Council of Mallorca, beginning in July 2023. Maybe that is why the Council have intervened (see para 2 in #1). However, like all things in Spain (to me) who’s responsible for what is very confusing/complicated..

Would this also mean the Daina Hotel and the Miramar Jetty ?

They are all so much part of the area and although I have not eaten in Capri it does look wonderful to have a meal in such a delightful spot.

What are they thinking of ?

The Capri hasn’t opened this year [yet]. It’s still boarded up and it’s not clear when or if it will reopen. One can only wonder what the effect of the loss of their jetty licence had on them.

With reference to the principal jetty that the Ajuntament have been able to temporarily reprieve after demolition work began, it’s the one in front of the old Mestral (now Dakota / DKT TexMex) on the Anglada Camarasa seafront at the bottom of Calle Llevant. Boulevard Group/Dakota have placed their tables and chairs back on the entrance to the jetty despite a very partially demolished wall. Sis Pins and Cappuccino, however, have still not occupied their conjoined sundeck and jetty terrace yet.

The Costas have now ordered the removal of over 300 bed and brolly sets from Muro beach, this is despite the fact that they approved the concession :confused:

Dear Guest

We want to share some news regarding the Hotel Sis Pins sunbathing area.

In Mallorca, government department Costas decides who is issued with a licence to use the public coastline. This year, along with many other establishments, our solarium licence is yet to be granted. We’re not sure how long the delay will be.

Right now, we are prevented from laying out Hotel Sis Pins sunloungers - but you are at liberty to use any seafront public area.

Our (hopefully temporary) solution is to place two complimentary lightweight reclining chairs in each room. You can use these wherever you wish, on the beach or indeed any waterfront public space – including the solarium (which is deemed public).

In the meantime, we'll maintain dialogue with Costas and make every effort to revert to 'business as usual' as soon as possible.

It’s absolute bonkers. Someone or people at the Costas seem to be on a complete power trip leaving destruction of businesses, livelihoods and, if they get their way, the heritage and beauty of the Port in their wake…

Just spoken to reception in The Miramar, where we are staying again this August/September, who seemed to be oblivious of what is happening with regard to jetties. However, they assured me that they had paid their license for this season, and all would be as normal.

See you in the summer.

That is good news but i wonder what will happen in the future.
 
Cleaners and workmen at Capri so will be opening soon. Were removing all their jetty tables and chairs into their store so they seem to have given up hope of reopening there.
