Deprived of our No Frills trip to Soller (through no fault of theirs) we decided to go to Soller in any case, en route to the dreaded Ikea. It is a really delightful place (Soller, not Ikea!) - grand yet peaceful - very pleasant wandering through the streets. However, the weather was so amazing that we decided the Soller countryside was a better place to be - and so we took a short drive out of the town centre to Ecovinyassa. This is a privately owned citrus farm, nestled in the most idyllic location with mountains all around, and benefitting from the Soller microclimate. The owners are organic farmers - the most lovely family, who are so enthusiastic about what they do - though when they told us they only earn 30 cents for every kilo of oranges, I could understand why they feel the need to diversify. Anyway, for 10E you can wander at your leisure around a trail and find out information about the many trees grown here - several types of orange, lemons, limes etc, but also avocados, pistachios and even the bizarre Buddha's Hand Fruit. Little signposts along the way give interesting facts about what you are looking at. The whole tour takes about an hour (depending on how long it takes you to feed the chickens and play with the cats) - halfway through is a rest stop, with bottled water and oranges, and when you reach the end the owner brings out a huge jug of freshly squeezed juice and a snack of bread, oil, tomatoes and peppers - really fresh and lovely, and eaten in a beautiful courtyard setting. We had such a lovely time - it gave us a feel of what it's like living in rural Mallorca and making your living off the land. And 10E is a bargain (especially as children go free!). If you're looking for something a little different to do - especially if you are attempting to grow citrus trees yourself - I'd thoroughly recommend this trip. The owner took a great deal of time to give us advice and suggest where we might be going wrong! Opening times etc are on their website.

Another must. We have been attempting to grow a lemon tree in our tiny garden for years. We're on the 2nd one & have only ever had 3 lemons!

It's well worth going, Pollensa - if only to pick the brains of the owner! He really goes out of his way to give advice. And so much can be learned from just looking at the way they do things - we picked up so much info in the space of an hour or two. And it's such a beautiful spot - I didn't want to leave! I think they are closed from the end of this week until some time in February though - but normally they are open from 10-2 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Just a follow up on this as we finally managed to visit the Ecovinyassa (see ecovinayassa.com) just outside Soller last week.

Everything is as described by Kate above. We chose to drive to Soller via the tunnel (4.95 EUR toll each way) - but you can get the tourist train from Palma (puertopollensa.com/transport-taxis-bus-trains.html#trains) or bus to Soller (puertopollensa.com/transport-taxis-bus-trains.html#buses Line 354) & then walk (about 20 mins).

If you drive, go into the centre of Soller & then follow the signs to Fornalutx (it's on the Carretera de Fornalutx (we had a Sat Nav!) and park on the road by the entrance signs (don't drive down the track to the house). You can reserve on line but we just turned up at 10am - it was very hot! They are open 10-2 Mon, Wed & Fri.

As mentioned above, you take a self-guided tour around the different types of citrus trees following around 50 information boards and the scenery is breathtaking. Half-way round we found benches under a tree with oranges to eat. At the end there are tables set-up and you're served a jug of orange juice, we also had home-made lemonade, plus pa amb oli (bread with oil and tomato). Finally you are offered bags of oranges and lemons to take home - all for 10 EUR per person. We also tasted and bought their own orange jam.

All in all an excellent day out.

We tried to eat in Soller but it was extremely busy and hot, so gave up and ended up having an excellent Menu Del Dia in Santa Maria del Cami on the way back.
