Be careful with the small print

We flew out to Palma via Easyjet 1 case , luggage allowance of 20kg per person so theoretically 40kg allowed in case ( if big enough ) ....... case weighed about 21kg

We flew back with Ryanair

Same case , BUT 15kg limit and no opportunity to share our allowance .... ( that was the bit I didn't read ) ..... so because 1 case we only got 15kg between us

I could have booked an extra case when I booked the flight but didn't think we would need 2 cases for a 4 day break

They wanted to charge us 48 euros coz we were 6kg over

So, we took out the wine and books and added it to my hand luggage ........ eventually got the weight down to bang on 15kg and checked in

Then I remembered you can't take liquid through security ....... so one lucky guy who was waving off his family for a holiday in the UK got himself a couple of bottles of Vina Sol

Then we went to the duty free and bought another couple of bottles coz we were taking them back as gifts for the child minder and cat feeder

BUT they only cost 10euros ...... so we were better off in the end

Moral of the story ...... read the small print and pay the extra £2 for another case , even if you don't need it ...... BUT also beware .... they will let you pay for more than 1 case per person but still restrict the total luggage weight to 15kg per person

If they wern't so damn cheap I'd just not bother with them !

This is relevant to this section but could come under shopping too. This is a sort of warning that my help others.

In Mallorca last August, my husband bought me a piece of pottery from a fab shop in Soller. It is a head and shoulders bust of a Spanish man and due to the weight and the strict excess baggage rules, we decided to pay to have it shipped back to the UK.

What a mistake - we collected the piece from the airport a few weeks later and opened it to find it covered in customs tape and broken into about 15 pieces. Now nearly 3 months later we are still no nearer to proving who has broken it but are in the process of claiming against customs as we believe that it has happened as a result of them not repackaging it correctly after examing it.

The whole thing has been very distressing and we now wish that we had just put some money to one side and paid the excess baggage at Palma.
I just wanted to let others know that if you are looking at bringing something breakable home - look seriously at paying the excess baggage rather than enduring the nightmare that we are going through at the moment.

I have the female version of this bust that I bought a few years ago and was looking forward to having the two side by side, instead I have a box full of broken pieces...

An update on this - customs are going to pay for this!! They cannot prove or disprove that the item didn't break as a result of their officers as some documentation is not available! So they have agreed to refund all costs plus give us a bit extra by way of any apology. However this has taken nearly 5 months, lots of letters, emails to a national newspaper journalist for advice and a few tears along the way - but at last it seems it is nearly over... well it will be when we actually receive the cheque!

cd with easyjet although 2 passengers can take 40k of luggage they would not allow it in one suitcase as it would be far too heavy for the baggage handlers (and you I'd imagine!)to carry. I think the limit in one case is about 28k.

Whenever we go we always take 2 lighter cases even if we're only going for a short break. Once you've checked them in you don't have to worry about lugging them around so it really isn't a hassle. Also on the outward journey we are often taking things out to the apartment ..new towels, linen etc so it frees up lots of space in the cases for any shopping in PP..shoes ,bags etc
