What about my buying power when I go back to the UK??:mad:Never mind just won't go back

Hi, after reading about Crown Currency Exchange on this link I got really excited by the exchange rate once I had checked out their web site. As we are due out in a couple of weeks I thought this would be perfect for getting a good exchange rate (it would help with my water bill- previous link!). I mentioned it to my other half who then forwarded the info to one of his colleagues at work and he did a search on the internet about the company. The outcome is that I have today received this link to an article in respect of Crown Currency - its dated September 2009, so slightly out of date now but still makes interesting reading and I thought people might find it useful, especially about where they hold their clients money. I'm not a financial whizz kid; I just go for what I see as a good exchange rate without thinking any further (yes I get the old £ or € signs in the eyes!)

Hopefully this is not too far off post

Has anyone ever tried paying a uk raised euro cheque into their spanish bank account

Santander in the UK have told me they will write me a euro cheque for any amount I want ( funds permitting of course ) and that I can then pay it into most spanish banks for no fee

The exchange rate will be the actual euro / stirling rate and they will just charge me £10 for the cheque

This sounds very good as money transfers via the bank cost a lot more than £10 and are often done at a rate lower than the bank exchange rate

I think the 1.18 is the bank rate, i.e. If your changing thousands etc. The tourist rate is lower between 1.13 - 1.15 so I would be happy with 1.14. I'm out in PP from 06/06/10 and will take 1.14 in fact I think I'll take a trip to M&S this evening:)

Try the Post Office first We got 1.18 last week.

This is interesting.

With the demise of the Nationwide perk of free cash withdrawals abroad, I found out that you can use a Santander debit card in a Santander cash machine in Spain for free if you have a Santander (and their subsidiaries eg Alliance and Leicester etc) "qualifying" current a/c.

This Euro cheque seems to be an added bonus to Santander current a/c holders.

Let us know how you get on.

PS I transfered my current a/c to Santander using their transfer service via a cashback site. Santander gave me £100 for doing so and give a generous 5% interest. The cashback site gave me £50 for using them!!

So it seems to be a win win situation with Santander. Why do they have such a poor customer relations record?

Just checking the Euro ahead of January, M&S are offering 1.08 which is a bit of a shock, parity by 2011?

Any update on this PP Ace?

1.11 is better, it just starts to get worrying when it drops down below 1.1

On the 1st November the Nationwide Flex current account card ceases to be fee's free for cash withdrawals at ATM's in Europe. I know many of us have used this card in the past and have always received the bank rate on the day but I am finding it a bit of a struggle to find anything that would replace it.

I'm wondering now what alternatives are around, especially as the exchange rate has plummeted recently and there doesn't seem any signs of recovery in the near future.

Hi Whaley, in the same boat, if you check further back I think there are details about Santander who offer a similar deal as Nationwide did.

I sent funds over today. The rate at Lloyds TSB was 1.1243. I think it's far easier to do transactions through the Bank.

"SWS i got 1.11 here yesterday, don't know why M&S are that low"

Because WE live in greedy, rip-off Britain Sparky !!!

Nick just checked today, M&S at 1.10, post office 1.11 and Travelex 1.115

Online the Cheque Centre (on your local high street) showing 1.114 ,Thomas Cook at 1.1079,and the Money Shop 1.1069.

I generally find the actual rate in the Cheque Centre shop is marginally better than the online rate and their high street rate will be better than Thomas Cook or Thomson anyway.

If you are changing up on the high street, always try a bit of haggling if you have a large amount. Did this yesterday at Thomsons and managed a better rate than first stated - cheeky monkeys!

Can't see what the fuss is about over fractions of a pence. Sure if you are changing loads it will make a difference but rates change so quickly that any small gain could be wiped out the next day and you could be kicking yourself.

Adios
