I think the market has the jitters about interest rates in the UK and when or if they will rise. Its bad news for those of us dependant on pensions transferring from the Uk.

No panicko Lollipop,

The Eurozone is still a total basket case and as this slowly unravels UK interest rates won't be an issue .

Sit tight , I'd still back Sterling against the Euro over the next few months.

BonysLad :)

I'm with BL on this one. The Pound is the place to be (or the Swiss Franc).

'Tis my view that it's just a matter of time before one country decides to take back control of its own economy and withdraw from the Euro. The whole Eurozone scheme was flawed from the outset and countries that shouldn't have been let out of a paper bag were allowed into the Euro for purely political, not economic, reasons.

Once one country pulls out then the Euro has a shelf-life of just a few years.

Just my 2p. :)

Rich,

Might not agree with you on Lycra mate , but you are totally right on on this one.

Actually I'm backing Gold myself which hit a record high today of over 1500 dollars an ounce today . Still reckon given the basket case of the US economy along with Europe might, just might hit 2000 dollars later this year.

Don't forget folks , when you're in the money who gave you the heads up !!

BonysLad :)

Ryansclan's question is 'what is the current exchange rate like in P.P.'
Don't think he's remotely interested in the politics of the Eurozone or the price of Gold!
(Even though they will have a bearing on it).

Any more info on the Pound/Euro Exchange Rate in P.P. from you guys out there please?

May have posted this before so apologies if you have already read but IMO Rich is spot on. Although they deny this is happening the Germans hold onto any Euro notes which have been issued in their country. There are distinguishing marks/numbers on every note to identify its country of origin.
There is a stupid idea floating around the Eurozone countries that one day a German Euro will have a different value to say a Portugese Euro - I joke not!
If I can find the article I will re-produce however the basis of it is that any Germans who store cash (under their matress) seek out German Euro notes in the first instance.

I am afraid that the short to medium term outlook for sterling exchange rates is not good. With high inf ation and low interset rates sterling is not seen as a good investment at present and the euro is seen as stronger for investors - the £ has plummeted in recent days as interest rates are kept low and it does not look as if they will rise significantly in the near future:(

I GOT 1.09 OUT OF THE BANK TWO DAYS AGO

BonysLad

I get the exchange rate daily from the London trading floor at spot rate, today was 1.13895 and one bank in Puerto Pollensa is giving 1.1275 at close of the day (or half day as it is here), I cannot mention the name of the bank as this is only allowed if the company advertise with this site. I have always found it better to exchange in resort.

In case you want to start collating your cash ;) :-

German notes begin with an X, Greek notes start with a Y, Spain's have a V, France a U, Ireland T, Portugal M and Italy S.

Belgium is Z, Cyprus G, Luxembourg 1, Malta F, Netherlands P, Austria N, Slovenia H, Slovakia E and Finland L.

Last week was getting €1.223 to €1.135 using Nationwide credit card for purchases and Nationwide Visa Debit card for an ATM cash withdrawal. Credit card fee free for Euro transactions. Visa Debit charges for cash withdrawal (£5 for €250 withdrawal). Still in credit with my free Nationwide annual travel insurance in lieu of fee free Visa Debit overseas transactions.

Thanks...I think?

"Never before, in the history of euro exchange conflict....has so little been said by so many about how much I can change my £10 notes for in PP" ;)
I'm fine now on Gold, German and Portugese Euro notes, withdrawals from the single currency, eastern european entry opinions and my thanks to those of you who gave me a steer on changing notes in resort. Now all I have to do is find out where the 'unamed' banks are??

If any of us could predict precisely what the Sterling Exchange Rate will be at the end of next week, with all due respect to this lovely place , we'd be sitting on our luxury gin palace in Monte Carlo Harbour.

Ever tried nailing jelly to the wall ?

Stick your card in any ATM next week at any Bank here and if you don't like the rate , pull it out and walk away.

Bit like playing the old slot machines really.

I just happened to get 1.09 on one of the worst days for Sterling this week.

BonysLad :(

OK Ryansclan I shall give you a clue and will probably get my wrists slapped by sticky but the place in question is opposite Hardleys diner, oops now thats me advertising two places. The pound has dropped today to 1.117 but I think that is because of Easter and the speculation on what the UK will do about interest rates, as Bonysland says the guys that control this are spending Easter in MC or even Bermuda surrounded by their bodyguards.

I think Ryansclan's (note the 's) request was most reasonable.
There must be lots of you out in P.P. changing Pounds for Euros.
What are you getting? Are you afraid to answer in case you're getting less than others!!!
Thanks to BL who admitted to 1.09, Magprop who hinted at 1.11 and Clinkham who suggested 1.12 / 1.13 last week using Nationwide credit card.
I know you 'pays your money and takes your chance' - BUT...............
Todays rate is................... and where....................

Pescador there may not be as many members here as you think and most of those that are will not be logged on, they are probably busy enjoying themselves.

Excellent answer Sparky!
Unless you have loads of money to change in which case you should use the services of a currency exchange company. In my view, the odd cent here or there really makes very little difference in the big scheme of things. Much better to be out there having a great time and perhaps foregoing the odd icecream. It seems that the rates between banks etc is fairly competitive anyway.

Thank you Eleanor.
It is also worth noting that you get a few cents more if you use travellers cheques rather than bank notes and also some exchanges may appear to be offering a higher rate but ask if they charge commission.:)

The £ has strengthened a bit today on the back of better than expected retail figures for March. Interest rate rises still seem a way off yet so this will keep the £ rate weaker against the euro as the euro offers better returns for investors.

Exchange rate down to 1.08 today, Visa rate is 1 Euro = 0.890527 British Pound for withdrawals which is around 1.12
