Hi , just wondering if anyone has travelled on the Barcelona to Alcudia or Palma ferry in recent years ?and if the crossing is rough during June time ?

I suffer terribly from sea sickness and I know the crossing is around 7 hours which is a very long time when you are unwell . In fact, when you begin thinking that jumping overboard is a good idea and will end your sickness you are in trouble!!!! !.
Any thoughts or experience would be welcome.

Not really relevant to your question, but the Irish Sea is rough on occasion. I remember as a teenager going from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire , usually a three and a half hour crossing that took eleven , to say it was a horrific crossing doesn't do it justice !

Also not really relevant but we tried the Swansea to Cork ferry one Christmas which is a 10 hour trip. We did it in a force 10 and the journey took 15 hours! I too am a terrible sailor and laid on the top bunk in our cabin and they had straps to hold you down! It was horrendous and I've not done a ferry since !!

Have made this crossing four times over the past few years, in June and early July. Sea was as smooth as a millpond on each occasion.

We’ve done the Barcelona/ Alcudia crossing in June and September for the last 6 years and have never had a rough journey. We had one really bad crossing going from Santander to Portsmouth and really quite enjoyed it, but one very calm crossing when the sea was a like a millpond and my husband was chucking up the entire journey

There are two ferries from Alcudia - the fast ferry "Baleares" takes half the time ( 4 hours, I think) and goes twice a day

Hi , Thanks so much for the encouraging info , looks like I`ll give it a try :).
Alcanadakid, I did not know about the fast ferry to Alcudia so Im away to google it now. Sounds promising.

seeing as were doing sea sickness exploits....back in 2002 we got the boat from PP to Puerto de Soller, which sounded like a nice day out. Well, as we got further out of the bay the gentle swell got bigger and bigger, head on, so it was hang on for dear life and then when we turned to go down the side of the island the waves were hitting the side of the stern making the boat move a bit strangely.

By the time we pulled into the port it was like a hospital ship, my daughter had been sick 11 times!

I then had to pay for a taxi to PP, as there was no way anyone was getting back on the boat!

OMG . We hired a small boat inKassiopi, Corfu years ago, we were warned not to sail too close to the Corfu shore, too many sharp rocks, but then again not to stray too far out, or the Albanians may start shooting at us. Not quite the relaxing sail we had planned. As we started our return journey back , the boat started taking water in as the waves had got so high ! I "sunk" a few G&T's once back on Terra Firma !

Good grief Varsp
we did exactly the same thing in Kassiopi in 1994 and never again . The huge navy ships ( I think) were passing up and down the straight between Albania and Corfu , very scary indeed. We moored up in San Stefanos, lots of vomiting, and myself and friend took a taxi back to Kassiopi and our poor husbands had to take the boat back, nightmare . The boat was too small, but when you are young and carefree these things seem like a good idea.

Back to the journey and we have decided to try it this autumn , travel permitting. Ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan, drive down to Newhaven and across to Dieppe so we are west of Paris towards Rouen on the drive to Barcelona for the ferry to Alcudia. Just like that !!!!
We think we will take 5 leisurely days each way for the journey , cant wait. I do hope it happens . Jatx

Have you looked at the Corsica ferry route from Toulon to Alcudia... overnight crossing around 10 hours? Far nicer ferries, you get a cabin and it’s cheaper! Also the boarding process is much slicker, and the best thing for me you don’t have to drive around Barcelona which I find terrifying. We had done the Barcelona route for 5 years until changing to Corsica, and won’t be going back.

We used the Toulon - Alcudia route last year and recommend it.

With my past boating exploits, have always shied away from a cruise, probably end up like The Posieden Adventure, besides my husband gets seasick even when it's calm, but can water ski without mal de mere , not quite sure how that works ! Maybe because he's concentrating on staying upright.

Hi we drive every year as we stay for several months with our dogs and have used all three companies. If you want a shorter drive from the UK the Toulon to Alcudia is the best ferry.
Corsica Ferries company. This travels overnight so you get a cabin or you can hire a Pullman chair.
The restaurants and bars are very good, the cabins are clean and the crossing is always smooth. The Barcelona to Palma or Alcudia is also smooth and We have never had a rough crossing. The boats are older, basic provisions of food and the day crossing is slow So ensure you have something to read or watch on a device. Personally since finding the Toulon ferry we doubt we will ever use the Barcelona ferry. The whole process of finding the Port and boarding is so much easier and quicker with Corsica ferries, as well as being cheaper.

Ferry to alcudia

We travel every year by car by Ferry and by far the best company is Corsica ferries Toulon to Alcudia, for so many reasons. Better boat, ease of boarding, better restaurants and bars. Cleaner and newer.
The fastest ferry is 6 hours - Balearia company and the boat leaves about 10pm and docks early hours. The day boats are about 8 hours.
The process in Barcelona of registering and queuing at the Port as well as finding it is not straightforward. Also it’s a further 3 and a half hours drive from France.
All the crossings are smooth, all take cars and foot passengers. I’ve never been on a rough journey even in April. Personally for ease, comfort and quality I would only use Corsica Ferries now.

Thanks Debz - may try it sometime when things are not so crazy.

It’s a great way to go as no messing about at airports and no worries about hiring a car when you get there! We usually have 2 or 3 overnight stops through France each way and try and vary the route each time. Apart from the overnight stops it works out about the same or cheaper than flying and we’ve loved exploring France. If you have your own place in PP it’s also great to be able to load the car up with things you wouldn’t get in a suitcase! :)
