Thanks for this, Sparky - having been to this (sadly only as a spectator!) in previous years I can confirm that it is a lot of fun, with a really friendly atmosphere and bands playing traditional music to welcome the runners. A lot of these are local and there is usually much merriment from the crowd when someone they know makes an appearance. What we usually do is grab an outdoor table at a cafe along the route and then drink numerous cups of coffee while the race goes past... it's a pleasant way to pass the time.
