Hiring cars after 8th June no paper counter part

Can anyone advise on this? We are coming to PP in July and apparently the paper counter part of your license is no longer valid after 8th June and you have to obtain a code from DVLA to show you have no endorsements but it is only valid for 72 hours? Hope the link works, its the BBC news article about it.

In over 20 years I have never ever been asked to produce the paper counterpart. I suspect that no one will bother with it. Just in case, I access the wretched code before leaving, making sure that I don't do it to soon to ensure that its within the 72 hour period at the car hire desk. I believe it's called progress! ��
