How's the weather affected you??

Just wondering how the members, who are lucky enough to live in PP, have been affected by the recent terrible weather. Hope you're all ok, the papers make it sound quite bad.

Weather

To be honest, it's been awful.
Garages flooded with cars stuck in the water.
Manhole covers pumping water onto the streets.
Resources pushed to the limit. Thank goodness for Civil Protection who were pumping out everywhere, but found time to come and help us and to electricians who had been working all day and still turned up at 8.30 in the evening when they heard we had no water in our apartment block.
This has been exceptional weather. I have not met a person in the Port who has seen anything worse.
At least the rain has stopped, which will allow the place to dry out.

Alcudia Animal Refuge flooded. Helpers worked waist deep in icy water to rescue dogs. Sa Pobla police (refuge is on border between Alcudia and Sa Pobla) were magnificent as commandeered a JCB to get refuge helpers, perched in shovel at front, closer to the shelter (roads impassable even for 4 wheel drive vehicles). Helpers ferried animals out in anything that would float (wheelie bin, table-tops, plastic bowls), and police took them in JCB back to drier land.
All dogs saved, sadly two kittens drowned. All animal food, medicines and bedding lost, generator destroyed. Refuge waiting for waters to subside to assess damage but have launched an appeal for help. Appeal poster is on Talk of the North website (Talk of the North)

Re Floods

How terrible! Takes me back to the early 1970's when we were living in Las Gaviotas (Playa de Muro). It was about the same time of year and it rained so hard, day and night for weeks. At that time there was only swamp land between Las Gaviotas & Sa Pobla (no buildings at all) and it was just one great 'lake' totally impassable.
We were completely cut off for 4-5 weeks. Luckily we lived in a chalet which was on pillars (garages underneath) so the water didn't actually come into the house but we were unable to get out to anywhere as we were completely surrounded by water. The car was completely submerged and the water was too deep anyway.
Fortunately we had a friend who used to be in charge of the Basura for all that area and he brought food to us 2 or 3 times a week in his lorry and we used to hoist it up to the veranda by ropes!
My poor in-laws were on their first trip out to Majorca and had only been with us for 3 days when the rains came! They ended up having to stay 6 weeks instead of the 7 days they'd booked!

These last few weeks certainly make us appreciate the wonderful days like today - blue skies and sunshine which we all take so much for granted I suppose. Water is still sitting and running everywhere but it is improving at least. Keep those sunny days coming is what I say.

Most of the serious damage came from torrents breaking their banks, as was our case......went to bed with a bit of water pooling and woke up to ducks swimming in the garden!! It affected the car etc but most annoyingly our generator which is going to cost an arm and a leg to repair. In the end we walked a km in nearly waist deep water to get out of the flood area, we fared better than most in the area as they were airlifted out at 3 am. Actually if it wasn't for the damage and the loss of life in the north west of the island you could say it was quite an adventure........apparently they have forecast more bad weather towards the end of this week, so we better make the most of the blue skies!!

The local tourist board claim that mallorca gets over 300 days sunshine a year.Don't know how they arrive at this figure as it always seems to be raining in Mallorca these days ?

Going out to PP on boxing day and the forecsat isn't great.

Still, better than being at home though.
