In praise of Inca Hospital.

Glad your experience of Inca hospital was good but so sorry that you needed to use it, speedy recovery Animagic :).

Good to hear these stories.

I visit Tenerife annually and there are always accounts on the TripAdvisor forum of ambulances taking tourists to the nearby private hospital, rather than to the "NHS" one. Needless to say, the private one doesnt take EHIC so folk can end up with large bills if their insurance doesnt cover them properly. It's always struck me as odd as I knew that it wasn't the case in Mallorca - I've seen those "sun, sea and A & E" programmes.

I wonder if the regional governments can set their own treatment rules?

Thank you Harters for bringing up the subject of EHIC, public and private hospitals. Last year Mrs C had two emergency admissions to Spanish hospitals, both private.
The medical care in both was excellent, ( she recovered :) ) however there was a huge difference in the standard of, shall we say, hotel, food and cleanliness standards.

So the query is, if a medical emergency occurs and the ambulance is called can you insist on transportation to Inca** - ie a public rather than private hospital and use your EHIC card to cover initial costs.

Obviously, if someone requires an ambulance there is a degree of urgency, so leafing through insurance paper work etc to find out what to do is not good.

Anyone out there with a 'Janet and John' (remember them?) explanation of the current options when facing a medical emergency?

** If Inca is good enough for Mr & Mrs Sparky, I guess it would be ok for the Clinkhams - rather like following their restaurant suggestions:eek:
