Thank you Harters for bringing up the subject of EHIC, public and private hospitals. Last year Mrs C had two emergency admissions to Spanish hospitals, both private.
The medical care in both was excellent, ( she recovered

) however there was a huge difference in the standard of, shall we say, hotel, food and cleanliness standards.
So the query is, if a medical emergency occurs and the ambulance is called can you insist on transportation to Inca** - ie a public rather than private hospital and use your EHIC card to cover initial costs.
Obviously, if someone requires an ambulance there is a degree of urgency, so leafing through insurance paper work etc to find out what to do is not good.
Anyone out there with a 'Janet and John' (remember them?) explanation of the current options when facing a medical emergency?
** If Inca is good enough for Mr & Mrs Sparky, I guess it would be ok for the Clinkhams - rather like following their restaurant suggestions
