Better news on la Gola, looks like the council will take over the running of this and the upkeep, which is great news as it is such a shame to see it get into the state it is now, its such a great resource for the port and it is enjoyed by a lot of locals and tourists a like, looking forward to seeing it restored next year!

Pollença takes control of the Gola to slow degradation.
The ornithological center Gola in degradation from 2011 until its closure in 2013 due to cuts of the Government, will reopen next May, after the City Council of Pollença has reached an agreement with IBANAT to assume its management.

The full City Council on Monday unanimously approved the agreement between the two governments to regulate the management of the wetland , a green lung for the Moll and important reef for environmental tourism. The City Council has budgeted 30,000 euros to meet the expenses of management and latest specifications to award it to a private company specializing in ornithology staff. It is also responsible for ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the park. For its part, the Government should assume the maintenance and replacement of all existing elements.

Very pleased to see that article Sparky. Always have several walks around La Gola
on my stays in PP - it is an excellent asset to the resort and all sorts can be spotted.
(Osprey and other birds of prey, various heron species, white egret, wildfowl, various butterfly and insect species, grey mullet, etc., etc.)
It would also be wonderful if more local wildlife enthusiasts could get involved as well
as 'letting the management out to a company'. Perhaps other locals would then respect the area a bit more - especially those on their regular dog walks!

Totally agree pescador. It was very exciting when first opened - all clean and new, but certainly gone downhill in the last couple of years regarding cleanliness, and some people really don't know how to control their children or dogs around water! Have seen owners throw sticks in the water by the ducks and let their dogs jump in to fetch them!

Great news, it seems the centre for ornithology in Puerto Pollensa is going to re-open again in October! It would be good to see La Gola tidied up again and promoted as the asset it is.

Thats good news - we are staying in an apartment overlooking La Gola in October and its great watching all the wildlife from our balcony! When we were there 2 years ago we commented on how the walk round the area was ruined by all the dog poo- so just hope it doesnt go back to that state again:rolleyes:

The La Gola visitors' centre in Puerto Pollensa, so often closed since it was created six years ago, is to be re-opened from the start of February ...

...

As part of the promotion, there is to be a four-language guide that will give information about birds in different parts of the island...

In addition, local British resident, Andy Simpson, has produced a calendar featuring photographs of birds that is being distributed with two specialist UK magazines - "Bird Watching" and "Country Walking".

It re-opened yesterday and will now remain open all year with the exception of December and January. The opening hours for now are 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but these will be increased in the main birdwatching months of April and May and September and October.

In the park itself, an intention is to stop lighting it at nighttime in a hope that this will stop it being used for, among other things, botellón drinking parties.

So great to see it open again, hope they tidy up the whole area again, great resource for everyone, and such a lovely area to walk through :)

Walked around La Gola last Sunday. Apart from what appeared to be lots of hungry ducks, to my untrained eye there didn't seem to be much more bird life.

I wonder if the severe lack of rain is detrimental to its welfare.

Quite a lot of rubbish lying around, but to be honest I did expect there to be more.

Could a rubbish collection party be organised ?

Molt

Just been past La Gola.

There were FIVE men in camouflage clothing, picking up rubbish and basically sprucing the place up.

Hope it will be a regular event.

Puerto Pollensa La Gola centre officially reopens » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

The La Gola visitors' centre at the La Gola park in Puerto Pollensa was officially reopened today
...
The centre, which has been closed for getting on for three years, has come back to life after a new agreement for its management and for the maintenance of the park between the town hall and the environment ministry. Originally opened in 2010 as part of the investment in the park that was in the order of some 800,000 euros, the centre should have been pioneering in terms of birdwatching tourism. Minister Vidal suggested that this original intention would now be met.

The La Gola ornithological centre in Puerto Pollensa reopened at the start of August, despite the town hall's contract with the concession holder having run out in July.

The current four-party administration led by Tots per Pollença and the opposition Junts Avançam (previously in charge at the town hall) have blamed each other for the situation. The wetland area is once more suffering from problems of apparent neglect and vandalism. Signs and benches have graffiti and the woods are not being adequately maintained. ...

Maria Buades, the councillor for the environment, explains that the town hall has been in contact with the environment ministry's Ibanat agency and itemised flaws and deficiencies that need remedying. She adds that the administration is fully aware that the centre has reopened without a contract, but notes that there have been various other services which over the years have operated in such a way; street cleaning, for example.
