La Patrona in Pollensa

Does anyone know the dates for this festival for 2013? We are arriving in Pollenca on the 3rd August. Just asking as I thought roads could be closed and our accommodation is in the centre of town

As far as I know the Patrona in Pollensa town is always on August 2nd but hopefully someone can confirm. I don't know if this affect roads the next day.

Yes Pollensa is correct, the final day of the fiesta which includes the Moors and Christians is on the 2nd August. I would imagine the roads will be in the process of being cleared up on the 3rd .

Yes and it normally takes a while to clear up everything, especially as they are still recovering!!, some of the temporary toilets etc may still be there but I would have thought you could get close to where you are staying depending on where it is!

Hi, and welcome!
I’m sure you won’t encounter any problems. We visited during the festival a few years ago and was particularly impressed as to how quickly everything was back to normal the following morning. At around 9.00am roads were open, most of the litter cleared up, and only a few hardy festival goers still trying to party! In fact, I remember pointing out that back in the UK you’d be waiting a few days for everything to be back in order! Have a great time

14:00: Firing of rockets and ringing of bells. Followed by street procession with the Soldà bugle band. Plaça de Monti-sion.

20.30: Street procession with the band of drums and bugles.

18:00: The first Patrona race. A course of 7,400 metres from the children's playground in C. Cecilio Metelo.
19:00: Giants gather in the Via Pollentia followed by procession.
19:30: Benefit party and supper with music and market. Joan March gardens.
19:45: Tournament between Madrid, Barcelona and Betis football fan clubs. Sports centre.
20:00: Puppets. For kids. "Les fades de la Bella Dorment". Plaça Vella.
20:30: Trial bikes evening, with musical accompaniment featuring the voice of Marian Oliver. C. de la Reina Maria Cristina.
21:30: Folk dance with Ballets de Catalunya and Racó de Tramuntana. Plaça Major.

Friday, 2 August (Patrona):
05:00: The Alborada. Plaça Major, town hall, Plaça de ca les Monnares, Via Pollentia and other locations in Pollensa plus Plaça Miquel Capllonch in Puerto Pollensa.
11:00: Mass and dance by the Cossiers. Parish church.
12:15: Cossiers dance. Plaça Major
12:45: Performance by the Pollensa band of music. Monti-sion church.
13:00: Refreshments for all. Town hall.
17:00: Procession with the Soldà band of drums and bugles.
17:30: Procession with the ancient image of Patrona.
19:00: Re-enactment of the battle between Moors and Christians.
21:30: Thanksgiving. Song of joy by Costa i Llobera. Interpretation of the Alborada and "Visca Pollença" by the Pollensa music band.
24:00: Fireworks. At the Costa i Llobera monument.

So wish we could be at the battle this year as our good friend Joan Cerdà Cifre is going to be Joan Mas, the leader of the Christians.

For anyone who's never seen this spectacle it's well worth going to. Very noisy, a bit scary at times, but very exciting to watch...

Cheers Sparky, that's really useful. Just putting the finishing touches to my holiday in PP (Gotmar) next week for a fortnight.

The festival is one of my highlights of the year, and I can't recommend going along and getting involved in the festivities enough! There's such a great buzz not only around the Old Town but also the Port when this is taking place. It can be quite a task trying to keep up with the locals' drinking including the customary downing of Tunel liquor, and there are certainly some strange sights in the early hours after the Marxa Fresca and the battle itself. For a first timer the main events in the festival can be quite overwhelming and perhaps threatening but the more years I've been going the more I've become accustomed to the festivities and all that come with it.

For those who have not been before and don't fancy the crowded streets,go to the football ground just beyond the roundabout on the LLuc road and watch the final battle scenes played out there.

A never to be forgotten spectacle! It must go down as one of the most memorable experiences I've ever witnessed. So wish i could be there. These photos were taken on the steps outside the Hotel Jordi (I 'bagged' my place by about 5.00pm!)

Well today is the day of the Moors & Christians battle....we had the customary early morning wake up call ie huge explosions that seemed to shake the foundations .
As I have said before they don't do anything quietly here .
