If you have been on the electoral roll in the UK within the last 15 years, then you can register to vote in the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union.

To register as an overseas voter, you must have been registered in a UK constituency within the last 15 years. All you have to do is visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote with your passport details and National Insurance number to hand, and the postcode of where you last lived in the UK.

The Balearics is very much going to be the place to be this summer but, as the industry has been warning, holidays are running out and now the airlines are cashing in.

Having been tracking the prices for the past two weeks, instead of getting cheaper, they are getting more expensive.

Those families opting for a self-catering holiday, renting accommodation and making their own way here to the Balearics, in particular Palma, or indeed visiting friends and family, here or in the UK, are going to be in for a shock when they start looking for flights.

I am not sure this is right as I have had a look at Skyscanner for late June/early July return when we are flying out and there are lots of cheaper flights. There was a Ryanair flight for £201 including 20 kg of luggage which is around 260 euros I think so 520 for 2 including 20 kg luggage against 700 euros for 2 with hand luggage only quoted in MDB. I was looking at London so it may be different from regional airports but the figure of 700 euros seems way out to me! I didn't look too deeply but this was my first impression!

With those dates, I think you are squeezing in before the start of the school holidays. The fares are sensible for late June/early July, but increase markedly mid July onwards. (Bristol/Cardiff flights look particularly competitive).
 
Clinkham - you are probably right, I didn't think about that - luckily we are well past having to worry about holidaying in the school holidays now!
 
I think we must congratulate the powers that be for being far sighted in widening the foot paths and modifying traffic flows on the front to accommodate the anticipated sharp increase in visitors to the island, and PP, following the difficulties in other holiday destinations.

This report is from the Euro Weekly News Bullfighting has now been banned in Balearic Islands



The Balearic Parliament voted on Tuesday (February 9) to amend the animal protection law to include a ban on all forms of bullfighting in the Balearic Islands.

The proposal was presented by the political parties PSOE, MES of Mallorca and Menorca, Podemos and Gent Per Fomentera. The amendment will also prohibit any event which causes suffering to an animal and pressures the State Government to eliminate public funding of bullfighting.

The campaign Mallorca Sense Sang (Mallorca Without Blood) has been lobbying for the past two years to stop this practice which they consider to be animal torture and ‘death for fun’. Thirty-three of Mallorca’s 53 municipalities as well as the Council of Mallorca have declared their support for the ban.

Campaign spokesperson Guillermo Amengual predicted the decision would be historic and that thanks to the efforts of many people and the support of the governing political parties in the Balearics, in a few weeks bullfighting will just be a bad memory.

More than 146,000 people signed the petition against bullfighting which included some well-known names from the worlds of fashion, sport, and culture.

Some villages have not declared support for the ban including Muro which supports the practice and Fornalutx which hosts an annual bull-run that is expected to be banned.

"Open All Year" meeting - 25.2. 17:00 - Mulligans

Puerto Pollensa Open All Year: Meeting tomorrow » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

Tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) in Puerto Pollensa there is a meeting under the title of Pollensa & Port (CSV + F) Open All Year (the CSV and F refer to Cala San Vicente and Formentor). It is a meeting to discuss ways of boosting off-season tourism to Puerto Pollensa (and indeed the other parts of the Pollensa municipality).

The meeting starts at 5pm and is at Mulligans Bar, C. Atilio Boveri (just off the church square).

Illegal billboards in Pollensa will have to go » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

There are too many illegal advertising billboards creating blots on the Pollensa landscape, according to the town hall's ruling administration

The number of billboards has increased in recent years without any control having been exercised by the town hall. The current administration wants to put an end to them, arguing that they affect the general landscape. It is asking owners of land on which the billboards have been placed to "voluntarily" have them removed.

So long as they are removed, though, there will be no sanctions taken.

Once the period for voluntary removal ends, however, the town hall will open proceedings that could lead to fines and to orders to take down the billboards.

Thanks for this Mike. It doesn't seem clear as to how it will work - we will be there before 1st July and departing on 4th July so I wonder if we will pay just for 4 days or if it only applies if you arrive after 1st July?
 
If you are staying in a hotel there is a good chance that during 2016, they will pay it for you.
