Just got back from a wonderful week in PP and have a number of random thoughts……..
Jane and I flew out from Liverpool to meet my son who flew from Gatwick. We flew early in the morning and arrived within ten minutes of each other. Subsequent flights that day were cancelled due to the ash. SO VERY lucky….I’m so sorry for those of you who have been disrupted.
Thank you Villa Parade for the usual decent accomodation, and included car hire. Thanks to Avis for a Seat Ibiza 1.6 tdi with just 300km on the clock. There are so many car hire horror stories. This was a good experience.
Where is everyone? Never seen the place so quiet, and friends in bars and restaurants confirm it’s really a poor year for visitors. Mind you, there’s no parasols on the beach yet, and that so makes the bay look nicer.
Is it me,or has the place cleaned up a bit? We last visited in June 2009 (sorry, we’ve done Lanzarote and Cyprus in between) and the whole place looked more cared for, tidier and litter free than I remember. The building work around The Daina is also more or less finished, and that has cleaned the place up considerably.
We weren’t very adventurous eating out. We re-visited three favourites, twice each……
Brisa Marina provided the usual warm welcome and excellent value. Prices a few cents more than last year, but great value for money and somewhere we would never miss on a trip to PP.
C’an Josef has again proven to be fantastic. Of course, the fact that Josef recognised us by name (how does he do that?.........only been there twice before) and gave us the warmest welcome was a wonderful start, but the food here is truly outstanding, not the cheapest in the port, but somewhere you really must try…you won’t be disappointed. The highly excellent Migel (formerly of La Goleta and other well known establishments …”alright – fantastic” ) adds yet another dimension to this excellent establishment whose prices are unchanged from last year.
The most wonderful revelation for us was Zarzarles. A couple of years ago we thought that this restaurant had “gone off” and was frankly overpriced, particularly the wine (Marques de Riscal 34 Euros against Brisa Marina’s 18 Euros). We didn’t visit in 2009. However, what a transformation! Zarzarles is back to its absolute best, prices are very reasonable (Marques de Riscal now just 2 Euros dearer than Brisa). Yolante is the perfect hostess, the food out of this world (local Lamb and Roast Suckling Pig the high spots of our visits), and this restaurant is right up there where it belongs. So I’m really looking forward to visiting again when we return.
Next trip is the last week in July, first week in August, when Jane and I visit for two weeks with our two sons and “better halves”. One is a teacher, so it’s expensive school holiday time - not done that for many years. I’m interested to see just how busy it will be……couldn’t be much quieter than last week, that’s for sure.
Can I wish everyone the very best luck with travelling. Apparently the last time the damn thing erupted it went on for 23 years! We’ve looked at all sorts of contingency plans (trains, ferries and cars) that just go to show how lucky we have been to enjoy cheap flights from all corners of the UK for so long.
Well, I told you that the thoughts were random. I leave you with the thought that, in the General Election I voted for the Icelandic Volcanic Party , because in five days it did more to curb immigration than the Government managed in 13 years.
