Road crossings

Hi all,

could any one enlighten us on what the rules are at pedestrian
crossings in Puerto Pollensa . It seems as if it is up to the
motorist whether they stop or not.

Many times outside the Hobby Club apts we witnessed close calls
especially where children are concerned as they will expect the
traffic to stop.

According to our solicitor in PP the rules for pedestrian crossings are the same as in the UK and if there was to be an accident the motorist would be in serious trouble - however theory and practice are two different things!

Hi jmac,

If you stand and wait on the pavement at a crossing, no one will stop, however if you step onto the crossing traffic SHOULD stop, it is advisable to be very careful as some drivers do seem to carry on regardless.

Yes, just standing at the curb will not cause any Spanish motorist to stop, probably because many Spanish people stop for a chat at the side of the road even if they have no intention of crossing! You need to show clearly you want to cross by taking a step out -- but preferably not right in front of a speeding vehicle!
Depending on whether the so-called pedestrianisation project is still going on this summer, there might not be as much traffic in front of Hobby Club this year anyway, since although cars can still go past at that point, they can't get all the way to the centre of the port along the seafront road, and many vehicles now use the bypass instead of the coast road

thanks for the replys, advice will be taken on board we dont want
to be movie stars on SUN SEAand A and E.

...also note that half the drivers are more interested in looking at the bay, rather than for crossings... I've seen many drivers just drive straight on while craning to look at the (admittedly lovely) view!

... always tread with caution regardless of the official regs!

I have even seen the Police and Guardia Civil drive on.
