hi all...it has certainly been a great weekend....this year we visited several of the fires...(last year we only made it to one)...We too went to Bar Esperanza Sparky.we had gone up to see Toni & Danny -were you talking with Graham & Christine -.I think I may have seen you a couple of times over the weekend but wasnt quite sure
Went to Formentor yesterday where there was quite a wait before the tree "set off" on it journey,,,the atmosphere over there is terrific..followed the tree along the fron for a while before going for a walk and re joining the festivities back at the square...Went for a spot of lunch at Can Torrens and could not believe how quick the climb as this year,,,as you say the tree was definately smaller.
A great time though,,,,I can see that this will need to be a regular fixture in the holiday calendar.
A quiet day today spent walking off the excess

Hi Cath yes i was talking to Graham and Chris outside "Esperanza", their fire was huge wasn't it?.
Did you go by boat to Formentor?, i would not have wanted to be out in the bay in that pea souper. I too am having a detox day.......it's been a long weekend ;).

Yes it was a huge fire...we called up ealier in the day and watched it under construction - I should have introduced myself...graham would probably know me as the alcoholic welsh woman ;)...I always seem to have a drink in my hand when he sees us !!- I went by car to formentor...that was a little hairy too with the fog.We were chatting to some that had come by boat and someone said it had taken them nearly 2 hrs,,,he thought he had gone to Minorca !!!...fab fab day...you cannot explain this weekend to people at home

Sounds a great weekend was had by all. You were brave too Cath - I hate that drive to Formentor on a clear sunny summers day. Don't think I would attempt it in the fog- to scary! I'm with Sparky on keeping to dry land too. Glass in hand of course!
Must get over for next year. Have been 5 or 6 times over the years and always a great time to join the fun.

Well Bella - you beat me on the bet but as Sparky and Cath have said, the tree was much smaller this year. Did you know something I didn't?? emm - I did warn you I was a bad loser! lol

As they say, you have to be in it to win it, and at least I got a place. Well done Belladonna.

Well Done Bella, yes it was much quicker this year but the lad who won did use a different technique to the others, may have to sell what I think he did !!!!!!

I have posted some photos from the "Fires" on the Pollensa Forum Group Flickr account.

Perfecto, great pics Sparky mate :)

You are welcome, it has been so long since i downloaded and uploaded any pics.....4 hours later after many senior moments and a few expletives i finally cracked it phew!!!. Think i have earned a couple of glasses of vino later with Lorenzo. :p;).

You are supposed to be detoxing Sparky ;)

I HAVE !!!, not touched a drop since 11.45pm on Monday but it's Lorenzos last night tonight and it would be very rude not to give her a good send off. :D

Sorry getting back on topic, earlier one of the locals told hubby it only took 15minutes for the Town Pine to be climbed :eek:.

It was the first time our visit had coincided with San Antoni and what a great experience. We didn't arrive until about 21:00 and most of the fires were well alight, Sparkys photo's showed us the before picture which was really great, thanks Sparky.

As for the following day, the arrival of the pine tree by boat, through the mist on the sea, with a floatilla of small boats accompanying and the growing excitement of the locals (never seen so many out at one time) as they prepared the tree for it's journey through the town to it's eventual erection in the square.

We watched the whole event unfold and was really hillarious watching the attemps at climbing the tree by merry! chaps scrambling up, not bothering whose head or shoulders they were standing on :D, and then all sliding down in a crumpled heap at the bottom when they didn't manage it .

We didn't time it but it was about 1 hour before the winner conquered it and won his prize (definately not 15 mins:rolleyes:), he was like a monkey after bananas, he just shinned up the tree without even a break to rest his arms or legs. He was carried round on the shoulders of the merry spectators for quite some time, really enjoying his fame.

There was an ambulance on scene but the only person we saw them treat was a poor chap that had collapsed because of too much vino (or whatever!). There were a lot of merry people around and plenty of alcohol being consumed but no trouble at all, just people having a really good time, enjoying themselves. Within 1/2 hour the square was empty and PP was back to it's sleepy winter state.

Fantastic day and really enjoyed spending time with other forum members. I too have some photo's but it will take me a little longer than Sparky to get them posted, so please be patient, I will get round to it eventually.;)

Good write up ww, thanks! The lads do love a bit of lubrication before they have a climb don't they?! There again - would anyone do it sober!!?
Isn't it strange to suddenly see the people all disappear again after such a build up and fiesta? Glad you enjoyed it though, along with everyone else who was out. Am checking next years calender for dates already, may well see you out there!;)
