Oh my!!!! what a night ....the wind which was constantly changing direction caused havoc with the fires, every so often there were showers of sparks flying through the air accompanied by clouds of smoke .
I am sure the Port was much busier than last year, it was as always very noisy with most of the bars having music systems outside, all playing something different. Nostalgia had live music (outside) with the Fat Cats Reunion and guest singers Marie and Carol Kidd, absolutely fantastic.
So that's the fires over with, we were woken just before 8am by the huge booms which tell us they are off to Formentor to get the tree, i have had my breakfast of coffee and paracetamols (yes the head is very fragile
), the church bells have been rung, calling the people with their animals for the blessing. Hopefully it will stay dry for the tree climbing.

Here are some of the fire outside Casa Sparky, the first one was taken when the judges were visiting along with the pipes and drums band:-

So today was the tree climbing day, it was a very damp start with occasional showers but at least the wind had dropped.
The tree was supposed to arrive in the square at 1pm but of course we are on Spanish time so it was anyones guess as to when it would actually get here and it eventually was dragged in just before 3pm, then it had to be soaped and erected so it was just before 4pm before they started trying to climb it.
The good thing about the delay was that it gave the sun time to make an appearance and of course the bars and restaurants were doing a roaring trade.
I watched for a little while but by now the effects of a very late night were taking their toll, i was hungry and decided to head home. So that's it another great Sant Antoni in PP is over, i have added some more photos here :- Sant Antoni 2013. - a set on Flickr.

Did anybody manage to conquer the tree? We watched till 4.45pm and up to then the best climber had only managed a quarter of the way up. The trunk of the tree was much wider in circumference than I have seen before and this seemed to be the problem.

OMG!!! thanks for pointing it out Clinkham, i didn't notice it was wrong, even though i had moaned at hubby for changing the settings on the camera because i think having the time and date spoils the pictures. The alcohol has dulled the brain i am afraid

Whaley i am afraid i don't know what time it was, but it was eventually conquered, i agree with you, it did looked much thicker than last years and they had also soaped it well

Yes the tree was conquered at around 18.00hrs BUT with the use of the rope that is used to position the pine, this of course is against the regulations and the debate started as to whether the guy gets the prize!. I doubt that anybody could have climbed the tree due to the width of the tree.

The rope was used last year nor had the tree been soaped and watching the coverage of the Pollensa pine last night the rope was used there too, so as is the norm here....rules are made to be bent .

The powers that be tell me that last years climb was invalid because the lad climbed before he should have, i.e the base was not soaped which lead to serious complaints from the surrounding bar owners.........

Hi Sparky, just back in Yorkshire and it's all white and lovely, if not just a bit more than chilly. Good to meet people at the get together last week and good to experience our first San Antoni, more of which I'll post later.

Glad you are home safely Tonsyl, as you say it was lovely to see so many at the get together and also at different times throughout the week. I have commented to a few peeps (locals,expats and tourists) that i felt the atmosphere was even better this year and they all agree .

Having not been before, we spent some time driving backwards and forewards between locations. We cannot make a comparison year on year but we certainly found that the San Antoni Eve is treated very differently in the Port as against the Old Town. In the latter there were many very good efigies and reminders of the origins and one or two "political stabs" at authority whereas in the Port we did not see much evidence of anything other than simple bonfires, albeit some big ones! Partying was most certainly the order of the day and maybe one or two overdid it, judging by the hangovers on Thursday morning!
