We have recently purchased a villa in Gommar which has a large sat dish on the terrace. There is a very old sky box with a slightly scratched card left in the villa. We have minimum coverage of the main channels and after about 7.30 in the evening, no coverage. Anyone any ideas what we should do??

Also should I replace the card and if so where or how would I get one? We are with Virgin at home. We would like to watch tv especially during the winter months when visiting but don't wnt a huge bill!

Thanks for any suggestions
Eleanor

Hi Eleanor,

I've now moved your post as there are lots of posts already on satelite TV in this forum. Do have a look through them but fyi we have a freeview box. You may need your dish sorting but once you have bought the box there are no monthly charges or cards needed.

Thank you very much for the info. I will take a look.

I know this is probably a very silly question but I have very little understanding of what is available in Mallorca. Please excuse this question if it is VERY silly but is a freeview box in Mallorca the same as a freeview box which we can buy here for about £20 in the UK?

Thanks for your help. Regards
Eleanor

Eleanor, we bought out our sky box with us when we moved here,it does work but only with a freeview sky card .I think if you want a freeview box it is better to buy it from here. With reference to you problem with losing ITV, you can programme on other channels ITV Wales and that is usually better.

Hi Lollipop,

Thanks very much for the info. I have tried to find alternative programmes but still with little luck. I'm not sure if it is the dish. Perhaps I need to get that checked first of all.
Thanks again and regards,
Eleanor

Hi Eleanor,

Try gettiing a Humax box and bring it out from the UK. It uses Freesat which has a stronger signel and gets round the problem with poor signals in the evening. You will see that there are a lot of posts on this already

Thanks alcanadakid. This sounds good. I will google it to see where I can get hold of one. As I said before - i'm somewhat stupid when it comes to these things!

Any help appreciated.
Eleanor

Hola Elanor,

You need a Freesat box, it is different to a freeview box.

Freesat receives signals from satellites in the sky, Freeview from UK TV transmitters that are too far away.

Humax are probably the best make.

If you dont need a box that records to hard drive then a Humax foxsat HD is all you need

HUMAX UK Direct Sales Website

also available as 'Graded' here for a great price:

Graded are usually returned items but everyone I know that has bought a ' Grade A' says it looks like new :)

If you want a box that records to hard drive like a sky+ does then that is a Foxsat HDR

HUMAX UK Direct Sales Website (not a great price on there today)

There are also HD channels on Freesat, not many yet though.

You might find cheaper makes of Freesat box but best to buy a good one.

another good site for information and to find best prices:

Hi Eleanor

Another good source for information actually in PP is Miguel at Confort electrics.

Ocean TV from Palma installed our 1.4 mtr dish (needs to be that size apparently to be able to receive UK TV), they did all the wiring. We brought out a spare Sky box and old card from UK and I'm pleased to say that I have not missed a single episode of Corrie (I know, how sad am I!) and the reception has been perfect, no early evening drop outs. Initially I spoke to Sean from Ocean on the phone and he was very helpful.

I have done a bit of research on the boxes available and the Humax one does seem to come out on top for your requirements.

Hi Everyone, Just caught up with your responses having been away for the weekend. Many thanks indeed to everyone for all their help and suggestions.

Can't wait to be back in my in September - with or without Corrie!

Regards to all, Eleanor

As John McEnroe once said - can this thread be serious - does anyone REALLY need 'Corrie' (whats Corrie, I heard from the back of the room) when on hols in such a wonderful place as P.P. Just go for an early evening stroll down the Pine Walk... much, much better for the soul than English T.V.

Agreed - but we intend to be in PP for the cold wet winter so need Corrie to watch whilst snuggled up in front of the fire!

The winter can be long and hard without tv! So yes, I'm afraid I am serious!
