Semi pedestrianisation 2nd phase.

The tarmac isn't yet laid at the LLenaire end. The sea wall is finished and the cycle lane has tarmac but the road is still up as they appear to be putting in some pipework.

Felt sorry for the workers on Saturday, trying to work in the pouring rain! Its going to be very smart when its all done though....however, I am rather concerned about safety with that cycle path. Because you look for cars when you cross the road and then feel you have crossed the road when you step up on the kerb, you forget about the bikes! And do those bikes come along there fast! I can see some nasty accident happening as its just a momentary lapse of concentration and you're in a cycle lane where silent bikes are coming along at over 20mph. I reckon they should install lots of speed bumps!

Maybe there should be bumps from the pavement into the cycle lane so pedestrians can detect when they've crossed a threshold. Bumps aren't nice though if you've got a kiddy on a back but a little weave around a plant pot etc would be enough to keep their attention and drop speeds. Ultimately though, if you step into a cycle route without entitlement and get clobbered then the onus does come down on the pedestrian somewhat. We should all just try to be considerate ...

There is kerbing between the pavement and cycle path and also between the cycle path and road, i really can't see what else they can do apart from building walls or fencing. Surely it's common sense for everybody to use their eyes and ears to keep themselves safe .

If you know its there and are aware of the danger, you'll be careful I'm sure. I'm thinking of a family crossing the road, the kids see the beach, the parents are distracted and suddenly you're on a cycle path. Its similar in Brighton, where the cycle path is separated from the pavement by a yellow line. If you've not been there before, are chatting, see something, change direction quickly and suddenly its an accident waiting to happen!

Ideally the cyclists would be aware of the danger and look out for pedestrians, but the groups whizzing along on Friday where all chatting to each other at 20mph. Hope I'm wrong!

Pedestrians should be using the crossings and cyclists should stop at the crossings, please see the photos on post #98 of this thread.

Ironically the first picture on post #98 shows a couple walking across the cycle lane!

Think the cycle lane should have a 10mph speed limit. I know a woman who stepped in front of a woman cyclist near where I live....she was killed!

Yes i noticed that too, as i said everyone needs to abide by the rules.

There is a 20 km/h speed limit on the road but not sure if that applies to the cycle path as well.

Who is responsible for policing the use of pedestrian areas in relation to the continual misuse by cyclists riding on both the recently concreted promenade areas from the port to Llenaire and the pedestrian only area from the roundabout past the Miramar and the pine walk.

Quite agree. But, A simple sign instructing cyclists to give way to pedestrians in the built up areas could help? It is tourist area and any serious roadman/women should be training elsewhere i.e. the road to Formentor etc.

Jimbo

20 km is way too fast for cyclists along that stretch of The Port, far too many pedestrians.

Again, a lot of scaremongering.

1) There is a distinct border between the road and cycle path and a distinct border between the pavement and path.
2) Remember up to 18:00 it is a working road. Pedestrians next to any road have to keep their wits about them and keep young children close to them.
3) There are plenty of crossings which pedestrians can use. If they choose not to use them and hit a cyclist through their own negligence then the onus is on them.

Some posters who haven't seen it first hand are getting their knickers in a twist about nothing yet. The council have done a fantastic job IMO and have created a fantastic space for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. What more could they have done apart from exclude the motorists or cyclists?

The cyclists bring much needed revenue to PP and the island in general and it seems they are easy prey for those who don't cycle. Pedestrians should always be aware that it is a road and a cycle path with two wide pavements either side exclusively for pedestrians. If we all remember that what can go wrong?

Hoopy, all of this has already been said.

Hoopy, all of this has already been said.

Yet posters continue to scaremonger and cast cyclists as the devil incarnate.

It’s very simple, if any pedestrian steps into the path of a vehicle or bike they have nobody to blame other than themselves

As with all cyclists, pedestrians and drivers there are good and bad.

Some members are concerned about safety and have a right to post their thoughts without being accused of scaremongering or calling cyclists "devils incarnate".

Can we now move on please.

This has been posted today on the ajuntament FB page :-

URBANISME:OBRES of pedestrianisation of the port of pollença

The execution of the works provided for in the draft peatonalitzacio of the first linea of the port of pollença are in its final phase. As of today has already been asphalt until the roundabout of llenaire and during this day will be paved until avenida guillem colom. During the next holidays and weekend there will no longer be any stretch cut into the movement. After Easter will be the last touches with the road painting, the sowing of tamarells and palm trees that are missing and the placement of the street furniture.

Zebra crossing already painted at Tamarells, on the road, as well across the cycle path.

Road looks quite narrow now with the cars parked on the left hand side, since the additional strip beside the cycle path has been introduced.

The Easter edition of TOTN reports that: "From the early evening to early morning the (frontline) road is exclusively for pedestrians."
Does anyone know if that is true? Or do they simply mean no cars....?
