Shortish safe walks

I am visiting PP beginning of March for a couple of weeks to chill following recent redundancy, and as a photographer and keen on landscapes/ trees/ wildlife and birds, (although I am sure there are hundreds of places to go), was after some suggestions of good places I could walk to safely and relatively easily - or am I asking a silly question? Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

Hi Twizzle,

others may disagree but I would say that the easist walk to start with is the Boquer Valley. I think it only takes about 90 mins round trip. It is also renowned for birds & goats!

Do get yourself one of the recommended books for inspiration & the walking map - see Walking, Cycling in Mallorca - Majorca

I would also recommend the guided walks offered by Rich Strutt of Mallorca Waking Tours - just stick to the C+ ones! As well as being enjoyable walks, you won't have to follow a map & you'll have some great people to chat to. We've done several.

Another straightforward one is the walk between Puerto Pollensa & Cala San Vicente.

I agree with Pollensa, Boquer is the easiest and a very good walk.

Beginning of March should be fine for you. If anyone tackles this in summer you need a hat and plenty of water with you. In the height of summer it can be a very hot place with no cover except for the large boulders you walk through just after Bouquer farm. (I named it "Dead mans Gulch" because you could imagine being bushwhacked here!!)

Look out for the hole in the rock up on the Cavall Bernat ridge to the left. Intrepid walkers can sometimes be seen walking the ridge. I would love to do this sometime if I could find someone to do it with me who knew the route.

Another fine walk is the stroll across the Sillar Pass to Cala San Vincenc.

If you have transport, the walks across the bay starting at La Victoria on the Talia de Alcudia are excellent.

May be we could start a thread giving detailed directions for walks in the locality. Recent, first hand experience of local walks could be much better than many of the books available?

Walk directions are a great idea for the easy local ones. If you post them, please post each one as a separate thread with the walk location as the title. I'll then create an 'index' thread (as Jane has done for restaurant reviews with links to the walks.

Another idea for seeing wildlife & birds is Albufera in Alcudia but I have no experience of it. There is also Albufereta just beyond Club Pollentia on the coast road towards Alcudia. Can anyone comment on these?

We visit the Albufera on a regular basis. Nice peaceful walk up into the nature reserve,from the carpark which is Can Picafort side of the entrance.
Lots of flora and fauna to see but mostly a wide variety of birds,from waders to birds of prey. A stop in the reception to pick up a map and check on their board to see what has been spotted is quite useful. It is so peaceful and time flies. If anyone goes look into the bushes as you walk along the main canal and see my favourites the Night Herons.

Last time we visited Albufera, we were able to drive into it and park by the visitors centre. Our notable spot was a turtle/terrapin in the rushes - may have been an escaped or dumped pet? I don't know if they are normally a species found in Mallorca.

Thanks to everyone once again for all the helpful advice. Had a truly wonderful time which did me the power of good. Really loved the nature reserve at Albufera, but I think my favourite place (apart from PP which tops the list!) was Cala San Vicente, just beautiful. Can't wait to return. Would love to live and work there!
