Square to be upgraded ?

I think the old town certainly has a different feel, after living in the old town for the best part of 5 years, it's got that down to earth, friendly feel that many other places don't have, it's great to see families able to enjoy the square in the evenings without worrying anything untoward is going to happen, and you will find that locals do not want that to change.
The port however has to cater to the thousands of tourists that come flocking here in the summer season, and take a look and you will see that it's mainly the foreigners that come to live here who set up most of the lower end bars etc. but because the port attracts many people with high standards you will find most of these places do not last, and the same "local" becomes a little gold mine to the owner who then sells it to the next person with the "dream plan".
As regards Burger King, Tex Mex etc. I think they are great too, as many a time in the season I've been tired, it's been late, and lets face it I'm not on holiday and so don't have wads to spend (or the desire) so a quick trip into Burger King has been just what I needed, as well as for a lot of young locals.
The Port IS a special place, I am well travelled and looking at the pinewalk, the bay and all the families having a good time in a safe enviroment still makes me smile.
Yes, I agree, it's not perfect, it does need some attention, but for me, it's a top location to spend a holiday.

Square Facelift

As they say, nothing ever remains the same! I'm firmly in the must keep a upmarket feel about PP. It's alright introducing more bars/cheap restaurants to meet the demand of the modern tourist, but this type of tourist are usualy unlikely to return as too many changes can make a place just like all the others. PP has been highly successful for decades mainly on repeat visit tourist. It will be nice to see the square "done up", and what Bonyslad says about the school sounds exciting, but the brakes really have to be put on some of the commercial enterprises, they do the area no favours.

Anybody about to visit for the 1st time, don't worry, it is still a beautiful place, you'll have a great time, this type of "trouble in paradise" debate comes up every few years.

Good points made by all. I am deffo a Pollensa fan and know that all first timers will have a lovely time esp if they venture slightly away from the main stream. PP ha ssuch a nice feel about it what with the beaces and pine walk etc. Just wish that Pollensa was shown as a whole and not just the Port. I wonder how many families never get to the old town and experience a bit of a culture shock.

Great news about the square. Yes PP is looking a bit rough round the edges in places but think better than being over developed bigger resort. For me its the people that make PP and as long as you aren't expecting a big strip of brash bars you'll love it. We took friends last year went for a visit to Alcudia and they couldn't wait to get back safe and sound to PP. Sure most will be back next year like the rest of us.

Tombadino I agree with nearly all you say, although I still love to go to the port sometimes if not just for the beach, a face lift would help I think. The best thing about the whole PP area is that it can be all things to all people, something for everyone.

The Port

My husband and I discovered PP in 1985 and over the years we've spent 3 weeks in April there - wonderful. I haven't been since 2001 and I feel sad that commercialisation has reared its ugly head but I suppose that's inevitable. The thing that kept us returning year on year was that its character and lack of burger places and british bars, you can go to Magaluf for that. I also loved visiting theold town, especially during Eastertime, it was wonderful.

Unfortunately I haven't been back since my husband died but I do hope they improve the Port if its as bad as people say it is. To anyone going back this year, have a wonderful time. Maybe I'll pluck up courage to go back some time soon.

Looking forward to two unexpected weeks in PP 28 onwards.

I have been reading the eating out posts with avid interest, it's facinating how the place has evolved, even over the short 6-7 years I have been visiting.

Keep up the good work, I am a member of several Med forums and they can't hold a candle to this one.

Tombadino, I couldn't agree more about your comments re "tale Pollenca as a whole". We spent many, many, holidays in the Port and then ventured into a Villa just outside Pollenca town. Our eyes were opened to what we had missed in the old town. We love both and look forward to many more visits.

Talking of cleanliness - do you remember the time when men used to come along every morning and sweep the sand off the Pine Walk? I haven't seen that for years.

Well i am please to inform everyone that the streets are being cleaned every day by the man and his blower followed by the machine.There is also a lady with a broom and cart wandering around, although she doesn't do dogs doo, she just sort of works around it .
Also the bins are being emptied every day now, this includes the re-cycle bins. I know this is true because they wake me up in the early hours .
Of course there will always be dog doo and litter on the streets but that is down to lazy, inconsiderate morons.

I see - the Pinewalk is done early with a blower now? Makes sense. You can't halt progress. It used to be a man with a broom around the time the Helados man used to come on his motorbike.

Cleaning of the Pine Walk

Hi - the Pine Walk was still being cleaned by a cheery young man with a broom and a dustpan last week whilst we were there. He came along each morning and we became quite friendly with him. Conversation was a bit tricky as he's got some speech problems but we still managed to communicate about the football match that night
Other groups of workers were cleaning the beach and all the sun beds and shades were up on the section in front of Little Italy. The tractor was also cleaning up further along the beach. It's all beginning to take shape again - and it was also nice to see a great sand sculpture along the front as well.

We have spoken to people staying in the pollenca park, who had never even made it to the roundabout at Eolos !
Not sure which planet they were visiting from ...........
